Cheryl’s Stone: Stepping Stone of San Diego will host Cheryl’s Stone, events commemorating the 10th anniversary of its residential facility, from Friday, June 4 through Sunday, June 6. The facility is named after Cheryl Houk, former Stepping Stone executive director and now board member, who created it. On Friday, the events begin with an open house at Cheryl’s Stone (3767 Central Ave. in North Park) at 3 p.m. The open house will begin with a 30-minute teatime, followed by a proclamation ceremony featuring city officials at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, the organization will host a picnic in Balboa Park with tennis and volleyball tournaments from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. That night, Stepping Stone will host an anniversary gala called Celebration Under the Sky on the rooftop of the Porto Vista Hotel from 5-9 p.m. The gala will feature dinner, dancing and comedy. At the gala, Showtime’s Poppy Champlin will provide comedy, and Sandra Ware will spin music. On Sunday, Stepping Stone will host a pancake breakfast at Cheryl’s Stone. MCC 40th anniversary: The Metropolitan Community Church will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a number of festivities from Friday, June 4 through Sunday, June 6. On Friday, the church will host an ice cream social at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the singing group Prysm will perform accompanied by a celebration choir at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, the denomination’s founder, Rev. Troy Perry, will preach a sermon at 5 and 7 p.m. As bridge builders of Jesus Christ, MCC’s mission is to positively changing attitudes in the GLBT community toward Christ and the Christian community toward GLBT people. Voices for Life: A variety of theater artists will perform at the Voices For Life concert at Tenth Avenue Theatre at 8 p.m. Voices For Life is a benefit concert for the San Diego LGBT Community Center’s HIV/AIDS services. UCSD Hillcrest Celebration: University of California San Diego is hosting UCSD Hillcrest Celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. UCSD Health System was recently honored as one of the top 15 major teaching hospitals in the nation. To celebrate this award and UCSD’s ongoing commitment to serving all of San Diego, UCSD is hosting the Hillcrest Community Celebration to thank patients, staff and community. Everyone is welcome for free food and fun. Health screenings for vision, blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol are also included. Celebration of Song: The San Diego Women’s Chorus (SDWC) will host Celebration of Song at the Mission Hills Church of Christ at 7:30 p.m. Celebration of Song is SDWC’s annual Spring concert. The concert will feature music from different times and places that evokes longing, love, and pride. The program includes a wide variety of songs of struggle, triumph, beauty and self-reflection, all celebrating the human experience. The Women’s Chorus spring concert will also feature SDWC’s annual silent auction during intermission of both performances. Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon: The 26.2-mile Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon begins in Balboa Park (at Sixth Avenue and Palm Street) at 6:10 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. and includes 26 entertainment stages. The 2010 Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon & ? Marathon to Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will finish at SeaWorld, adjacent to picturesque Mission Bay Park. The much anticipated, newly revamped race route will feature more than nine miles along San Diego’s scenic waterfront, include a stretch through PETCO Park and, for the first time ever, a 13.1-mile half marathon. Robert Frost Poetry Reading: The First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego will host “The Poems of Robert Frost: Archival Recordings,” at 7 p.m. The program includes listening to these recordings of his readings. Robert Frost visited Middlebury College in Vermont in 1960. Frost was an American poet. He is highly regarded for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech. His work frequently employed settings from rural life in New England in the early 20th century, using them to examine complex social and philosophical themes. More Mozart: Enjoy the music of flutist Timothy Day as he joins the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra in the Balboa Theater at 7 p.m. Conducted by David Atherton, the orchestra will feature classical music, with selections from Dvorak and Mozart. Timothy Day joined the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1987. In 2006, he was appointed principal flutist of the San Francisco Symphony. In addition, he spent 12 seasons as principal flute with the Baltimore Symphony and taught at the Peabody Conservatory.
