To Bieb or not to Bieb…
Published Thursday, 17-Jun-2010 in issue 1173
Ladies, there is something that I feel as a hair stylist, lesbian and for that matter someone who lives in the free world that I need to publically address. This thing has taken over local bars, shows, coffee houses, and the internet and seems to be happening to the best of them. What possibly could be this important and infectious phenomenon? Well, I can reveal this dreadful metamorphosis plaguing our community and friends, is none other than the Justin Bieber cut.
Chicken or egg, so to speak! Did he link in with our lesbian style or did we hijack his teen look.
Either way, this must be stopped as it has even started flooding over into other parts of the gay community, namely gay guys and trans guys. You guys are also guilty! So what’s next? Drag queens with Bieber wigs. I really hope not! I have to say that for a sixteen year old boy he has a pretty decent cut, but notice I said sixteen. This could be looked at as what the 80’s meant to mullet lesbian cliché. The Bieb cut might be the 2010 lesbian cliché. I cannot count how many times I am asked to do a Bieb cut. I am not the first to notice this epidemic. The web has a site dedicated to this matter, where those with Bieb cuts who are lesbians can post pictures and compare with each other. What I think bothers me most about this Bieber business is the lack of uniqueness. We should embrace what makes us different and unique. I don’t know about most of you, but when you can’t tell your girlfriend or friend from the other because you are standing in a sea of same haircuts, that’s asking for trouble. Hair is important, and the right cut and style can express who you are, boost your confidence and show your independence. That is as long as you aren’t rocking the Bieb. So ladies, please, I beg you lay off the Bieb. I know, I know it’s your hair and I can cry if I want to, but I love my community and my friends and I also have a great passion for hair and style. Our community, whether we like it or not, has always set the trends for the mainstream. So if you ask me, some scout must have been lurking around the lesbian bars and decided that they would make a sixteen year old pop star look like a lesbian for marketing and branding purposes. Just a theory I have, although no proof! But, when you get a chance, take a good look at the Biebs and compare them to the real Biebs and see if you can’t find similarities beyond just the hair.
