It’s the first week of summer and it’s going to be a great one. So start getting ready for Pride 2010 next month!
A tour of the Juvenile Detention Facility
As a City Commissioner, my concerns these last seven years have taken me to many places and addressed countless issues. Recently, I took a tour of two adult San Diego jails after complaints from GLBT and HIV/AIDS inmates and asked the hard questions to officials, especially after the horrific treatment of a young transgender woman, changes were made (thank you Sheriff Bill Gore and staff). Not long ago, there were many accusations and media stories on the alleged abuse of youth at our local Juvenile Detention Facilities in San Diego, so I and three other City Commissioners (including HRC Chair Brue Abrams) went on a two hour tour of the main Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility and we left very impressed with the staff and the changes. This facility was built in 1954 and they get about 500 youth, ages 12 to 17 years booked in a month. 80% are affiliated with gangs, 60% with drug problems. There has been a rise in young girls being arrested, many for violence, prostitution and gang attacks. About 90% of all youth are booked on felony charges. GLBT youth are treated respectfully and fairly with the staff also being members of our community. HIV/AIDS and transgender youth get proper medical attention and all youth go to school daily. Sad to say that 75-80% of parents do not even visit their children in detention. With all the budget cuts and growing youth violence, the staff here are miracle workers indeed. Kevin Beiser for School Board
That super popular “Math School Teacher of the Year” Kevin Beiser beat out a strong incumbent and came in first, it’s no surprise to most San Diegans as change is badly needed on our school boards. Kevin is one of the most caring and compassionate educators you could ever want to meet. Did you know that as a child, Kevin’s family was so poor and struggling, that they lived in a tent for two years?! Kevin Beiser is that wonderful, concerned teacher with a big heart that we all looked up to in school that changes lives. He is concerned about the rise of bullying and suicides among all students in our schools. Beiser for School Board!

Boycott Pernicano’s Parking Lot
Yes, I agree we need more parking spaces in Hillcrest, but why a special event and “ribbon cutting ceremony” for the new parking lot next to that eyesore Pernicano’s Resturant? (I’m disappointed in this event, Councilman Todd Gloria) Owned by a 92 year old homophobe who “hates homosexuals,” and yet, now gets our money. The Pernicano family didn’t even send a representative, they’re laughing at all of us “queers” all the way to the bank!

“Nicole and Papa Frank’s” Food Review
Yes San Diego, you read right. This week, Frank Lechner and I started a fun and very “tell it like it is” weekly restaurant review. This week, we two fat Mexican queens reviewed four popular taco shops. Fasten your seat belts and get ready for the most blunt restaurant reviews in town.
Speaking at “Joshua Tree Pride”

Top Chef contestant Rich Sweeney opens Rs Gang Eatery in Hillcrest
Every year, I am honored to get many invitations to speak at national conferences, rallies, and Pride events. One of the ones I accepted is in San Bernardino County, it’s held in Joshua Tree, California. This great community is 3,000 feet above Palm Springs and their total population is about 65,000 in an almost all Republican, 87% White area. Last year, over 500 wonderful people attended their 1st Pride event. I accepted their invitation and I am more than excited to go there than when I spoke at my first San Francisco Pride Rally! These GLBT brothers and sisters are truly in the trenches of our fight for full equality and are truly brave for just being who they are in such a conservative red district in California.
