This week: 4 taco shops to go to or run from!
Published Thursday, 24-Jun-2010 in issue 1174
Welcome to our regular restaurant drive-thru, drinking spots, dessert shops, that are now in the Gay & Lesbian Times. We two fat, Mexican queens feel we are qualified to give you, our beloved readers, a real down to earth food review. So fasten your seat belts, here we go!
La Posta #8
Located on the corner of 3rd and Washington

This is an old stand-by taco stand, especially with drunk late night eaters (open 24/7). While this is not a ‘drive-thru’ taco place, it has been known for its drive-by shooting-like action and good ole’ girl hair-pulling fights late at night. Their kitchen will definitely never be used for a Tide dish washing commercial, but their five outdoor tile tables are pretty fancy and look great. Now for the food at La Posta. Well, now you will know why about half of their outdoor lighting isn’t turned on and why there are so many light bulbs out. You can hardly see the food you’re getting, and who cares when you’re drunk. At 3 a.m., you’ll eat anything! Our stomachs have gotten used to La Posta’s food after all these years, just like a guy on death row gets used to his food. This is “La Posta #8” so that means there are supposedly seven other of these taco stands. We hope, like this one, that they are all located near hospitals!
Los Panchos
409 Washington Ave

Now this is a decent taco shop that includes a drive-thru. Los Panchos has the best Mexican shrimp cocktails around with a wonderful, fresh salsa bar. The location is clean and the staff are friendly (they even wear the same cute orange uniforms). Their burritos and tacos are great, and the Club San Diego bath house is right around the corner if you’re looking for a different kind of meat to go with their fabulous Mexican sodas. It’s worth a visit anytime.
La Fuente
1227 University Ave

This place has a printed menu for you to take home and remind yourself why you’re on the toilet for the next two days. They boast a “free salsa bar” that looks like a BP oil spill hit it! As for their soups (Caldos), you’ll get better at Father Joe’s soup kitchen. Their tables and chairs, inside and out, look like they were taken from the county jail’s visiting room. We have tasted better Mexican food off a cart in downtown Tijuana. They actually have a kids menu but parents have been known to have been reported to ‘Child Protective Services’ for forcing their kids to eat this food.
Santana’s is now MXN
719 W. Washington St.
One of the best taco shops on the west coast with 12 locations in San Diego. This place rocks with the no. 1 “California Burritos” around. Their kitchen is big and super clean. Their menu includes “veggie Mexican meals.” It was already super popular as Santana’s, now they’re known as Fresh MXN Food and they‘re not lying as all their food is fresh and will take your taste buds on a true Mexican adventure. We say Olé! www.freshmxnfood.com
