City of Lemon Grove celebrates its first Pride
Published Thursday, 01-Jul-2010 in issue 1175
Lemon Grove Library will host the city’s first GLBT oriented event on July 10th 2010. It was officially announced in a proclamation by Lemon Grove Council Member George Gastil at the city’s iconic Lemon, between Main and Broadway. Rainbow flags and supporters dotted the presentation grounds as Gastil gave the historic proclamation, marking the first Pride day in the city. Gastil was quoted as saying, “This actually is a very significant proclamation. First of all, because of the event itself. It’s the first time that we’re having a GLBT oriented event in a County Library and we are honored to have it in Lemon Grove. It’s also very important because it’s the first time that we’ve had several council members sign something together for GLBT Pride. You’ll notice the Mayor and two Council Members have signed this proclamation honoring July 10 as Lemon Grove Pride Day at your Lemon Grove library.”
The celebration is from 12.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. and the Lemon Grove Library is located at 8073 Broadway, Lemon Grove. It will be free to the public. The event is a festival of literature, music and more as well as being a great place to learn about San Diego’s GLBT community and related legislation efforts. It will be hosted by civil rights activist Ron deHarte and will feature nine popular authors, including Robert Heylmun, Eric Shanower, Walter G. Meyer, and Linda Patterson. Speeches by Sally M. Hall about the online news hub www.ThatsSoGayLIVE.com along with other civil rights activists will be heard in between performances by singer/songwriters Mary Dolan and Lisa Sanders, the hip-hop themed Kruciaal Dancers, and the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus Ensemble. Other activities will include community booths, readings, free food, henna tattoos, health screenings and ticket giveaways for San Diego Comic-Con and the San Diego Padres. Council Member Gastil further quoted, “We are really proud that July 10 will be Pride Day for our Lemon Grove Library. It’s the first time this event has ever happened. I really think it will be a successful event and I think that we will probably do it every year.” For more information on the Pride Celebration, contact the Lemon Grove library at (619) 463-9819 or visit www.sdcl.org. ![]()
