Kip’s Café has had a long history with success in a less than helpful economy. Opened in 1956 by Kip Hom, this friendly little Chinese/Japanese bistro delighted customers in El Cajon and East County. Hom’s nephew, Wing Tam took over the thriving business in 1980 after Kip Hom retired. Under this family’s management and with its authentic, freshly prepared meals, full bar, and driven customer service staff, Kip’s Café created an unmatched reputation in East County as being one the best Asian eateries around. This reputation stuck after 52 years of dedicated service. Sadly, in November of 2008, Kip’s Café was closed due to an increase in space rental fees, an increase of about 85%! But earlier this year, Kip’s Café re-opened its doors in Hillcrest at an all new location, with all the same services and amenities that made the first location a prominent success. Same original staff, same food, and same giant portions. In its first few weeks of its unadvertised grand re-opening, Kip’s Café saw its faithful cult following, as well as a few new faces, flocking to this new, bigger location just to taste what this Chinese/Japanese bistro has to offer. With a variety of dishes that include udon noodles, sushi roles, and teriyaki dishes, this is one restaurant tradition that promises to please, not only its loyal following, but its interested Kip’s virgins. Kip’s Café and Wing Tam not only serve the community with great food and even better prices, but with community service as well. They have had a reputation in sponsoring private wine tasting sessions for Toast to Music of El Cajon City for years and even donated food for the event. They have also donated their food, time and services for Taste of East County, a fundraiser for Cajon Valley School District, for many years. Other East County associated community involvements included donated baskets, certificates and food to school silent auctions and varying community events in East County. While economic times have been hard on every business, this is one that refuses to sacrifice quality and service for anything less. With their new location, unyielding reputation and their unmatched cuisine, Kip’s Café is shaping up to become a staple, not only in El Cajon, but in Hillcrest and beyond.
