San Diego…
My kind of town for a staycation
Published Thursday, 05-Aug-2010 in issue 1180
Let’s face it the economy has got a lot of people stuck feeling they cannot afford to walk out their front door, let alone go on vacation, and those who can afford it tend to not have the time due to work pressures. However San Diego and the surrounding areas do provide a great deal of refuge and a lot of adventure if you are willing to explore outside of the box, no pun intended. There is a tendency for GLBT people to stay close to the gayborhood unless they are traveling to another gayborhood. But, before summer concludes have a staycation in your own hometown, as San Diego is a beautiful place to visit…even when you live here!
Over 29,000,000 tourists visited San Diego in 2009, enjoying everything that America’s Finest City has to offer. It would be hard to find another city that boasts as much…… the sunshine, the beaches, the local mountains, and a metropolitan quality that’s second to none.
So pack up, jump in the truck or car and do something that you will remember as making this summer so special. Besides, taking time off from the day to day grind makes you more refreshed and productive at work and really how boring do the bars get after a few weekends. So off we go to some new and exciting places that are right around the corner!
There is nothing like the bays and waterways that grace Mission Bay, and kayaking on the bay at sunset is a unique experience which you will want to enjoy again and again.
Aqua Adventures offers a Thursday evening social paddle from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. all year round for just $15.00, which includes all kayaking equipment. Whatever your level of skill, all are welcome. Aqua Adventures is a great place to get started for kayaking offering lessons, rentals, local kayak tours and multi-day adventures. Whether this is your first time or you are a discerning pro, they will have something for you. Visit www.aqua-adventures.com or call 619-523-9577. Aqua Adventures is located at 1548 Quivira Way, San Diego.

There is no place in San Diego that compares to the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.
This remarkable place is home to the nation’s rarest pine tree, the Pinus torreyanna, which only grows here and on the coast near Santa Barbara. The scenery is breath taking, as the cliffs overlook the deep blue Pacific below, the rare and elegant pine trees are everywhere, natural wild flowers and brush grows naturally along the earth’s contours. Torrey Pines remains one of the wildest stretches of land on the Southern California coast, encompassing 2,000 acres as they were before San Diego was developed. It offers a variety of dirt hiking trails that vary in distance and difficulty. The only fee is for parking which is $10.00 per car; seniors (62+) are $9.00 per car. There is a visitor’s center which is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Torrey Pines is open daily at 8:00 a.m. and closing time is approximately at sunset. It is located between La Jolla and Del Mar, along the 101 at 12600 North Torrey Pines Road, San Diego. Visit www.torreypine.org or call 858-755-2063.
The Cabrillo National Monument is one of San Diego’s gems which is often overlooked
It is located at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego. It commemorates the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542. This event marked the first time that a European expedition had set foot on what later became the west coast of the United States.
The park offers a fantastic view of San Diego’s harbor and skyline, as well as Coronado and Naval Air Station North Island. On clear days, a wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean, Tijuana, and Mexico’s Coronado Islands are also visible.
At the highest point of the park stands the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which has been a San Diego icon since 1854. The lighthouse was closed in 1891, and a new one opened at a lower elevation, because fog and low clouds often obscured the light at its location 129 meters (422 feet) above sea level. Visitors may enter the lighthouse and view some of the living areas there.
Cabrillo National Monument is open 365 days a year, including all weekends and holidays, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For security purposes, the entrance station closes at 4:30 p.m., the main gate into Cabrillo National Monument is closed at 4:45 p.m., and all visitors must exit the park by 5:00 p.m. Entrance fees are $5.00 per vehicle or $3.00 for walk-ins, bicycles or motorcycles.
The Cabrillo National Monument is located at 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Drive
San Diego, CA 92106-3601. For information please call (619) 557-5450.
Beaches and Bonfires…Coronado Beach, La Jolla Shores, Mission Beach, and Ski Beach and Blacks Beach
How long is it since you went to the beach? Probably ages! San Diego offers some of the finest beaches in Southern California, and now’s the time to enjoy them. Swim, surf boogie board, sunbathe and just enjoy. Then when the sun goes down gather round the fire pit.
There’s nothing like sitting round a beach bonfire on a balmy San Diego night with a group of friends. Many of San Diego’s beaches have fire pits, where you can enjoy a beach bonfire. Make sure you grab your fire pit early as the best locations get taken fast. Bring a picnic and enjoy. Please make sure you only burn regular firewood with no nails!

Also Blacks Beach offers hiking down beautiful cliffs and offers the only nudist beach in San Diego and a hang glide port.
