1945-2010 On July 29, 2010, Tom Murray, died suddenly and unexpectedly from a massive heart attack. Tom was a well-respected filmmaker whom had already made five GLBT related films. Studying filmmaking in college, it was not until his 50s when he had made his fist feature film.
Tom’s filmmaking style was unique, described by his friend Bruce Presley, as “both serious and humorous.” Presley extended the offer of directing a film for Downtown Loft Studio to Tom, he agreed.
The offer came in the form of the film Amancio…Two Faces on a Tombstone. Filmed in Yuma, Tom was whole-heartedly dedicated to the project, making numerous trips there. Those trips resulted in the befriending of the Amancio family and Michael Baughman, the film’s protagonist.
The film released in May of 2008 where is played at over twenty film festivals and winning a number of awards. Other premieres were at varying college campuses and most have described it as Murray’s “masterpiece.”
Tom continued creating films, one of his next projects was focused on the GLBT community and spirituality. And it is through these films that Tom Murray will be remembered by friends, family and captive audiences. “He was a kind and generous person with a strong sense of integrity that shines through his six films. He will be deeply missed,” said Presley.
