The importance of our community…
Published Thursday, 19-Aug-2010 in issue 1182
As a 20 year resident of San Diego I find myself grateful and appreciative of the fact I live openly as a gay man in a community and city that welcomes diversity. What saddens me is that we as Americans still have to fight to gain the rights that our constitution has already given us. When I heard o f the decision of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, I was just heart broken. You would think that after the Women’s Movement and Civil Rights Movement that our courts and our citizens would just understand that until all of us are free, then none of us are. I pray and hope that this fight will end with what is truly right, that we will have Marriage Equality very soon.
I feel that we are blessed to have such a strong and commented community here in San Diego. But there are still so many GLBT community members who rarely come out to support the efforts that concern who we are, in hopes that it will just be taken care of. The real truth is we need every single member of our community to come out of their closet and be heard. The more noise we make, the more our friends, families and co-workers know who we are and the better chance we’ll have their support as well. In doing this I believe we only bring people together in a positive way and then in return will help build a stronger community.
Over the years I have had so many people say to me that they want to get involved in the community, but do not know how or where to begin. It really is very easy. If you believe in a cause, charity or just something that is near and dear to your heart, then support an already organized event. (Just show up). While you are there ask questions and make your own decisions on how you want to help. Even by just supporting in the smallest ways makes a huge difference. You decide. It is very important you do your part in helping make a positive difference, not only does it help other peoples lives but your own as well. You’ll feel good that you threw your hat in the ring.
We all want to be heard, especially in these times when we’re fighting for our own equal rights. I for one try to live my life by example of who I am. Even with all my mistakes, I think people seem to realize by our actions, involvement and compassion that our voices are heard loud and clear. We all have our own ways of getting the message out; if we show the world through smart thinking, kindness and by doing our homework we will win our struggles. We do deserve every right that is afforded to us as Americans. So make your voices heard every day.

As a member of this amazing community, I am so humbled by not only the GLBT community, but our straight allies who have given me the support, love and effort to be able to join so many of you in helping make a stronger and compassionate community we have here in San Diego. I will continue to work side by side with all and any of you who are willing to show up. We need you and we welcome your time, involvement and talents. When we come together as a community we become stronger in making a better world to live in.
