As any San Diegan may know, there are no shortages of amazing places to eat in our fine city. For those who are Hillcrest locals, one of the first restaurants that come to mind is Urban Mo’s. In business and serving the community for over 18 years, Urban Mo’s has created a well-deserved reputation for great food and great service, in a fun atmosphere.
But Urban Mo’s hasn’t always been Urban Mo’s. The popular restaurant started out as Hamburger Mary’s, a small burger joint with a Country Western atmosphere. Co-owner Matthew Ramon states that Urban Mo’s is a one-of-a-kind experience, and it’s not all thanks to the food.
“Anyone who has had the opportunity to be at Mo’s knows that it is the most unique restaurant experience one can have. The food is amazing and our bartenders make the best cocktails in San Diego. However, the food and drink is just a bonus from the entire experience. Urban Mo’s is the best time you will have in the gayborhood. After all, we’re all ‘family’”
Urban Mo’s menu is an assortment of delicious varieties that are sure to please any palette, with choices that include the “Burger of the Month,” their “Big Girl Salad” and their Artichoke Chicken Sandwich.
Along with great food at great prices, Mo’s is also a place for great deals on said food. Every Tuesday is $5 Tuesday starting at 5:00 p.m. During this amazing time, customers can get $5 All You Can Eat Spaghetti and Meat Sauce while watching the best Showtunes extravaganza in San Diego. The spaghetti with meat sauce is Ramon’s own personal recipe.
Growing up in Michigan, Matthew Ramon started at Urban Mo’s 18 years ago with the drive to eventually become general manager of Mo’s along with co-owners Chris Shaw and Doug Snyder and partial owner of the company along with two other restaurants.
Proud of his accomplishments, Ramon is doing what he does best for the people and community that he loves. Offering them a great place to sit, eat and have fun. “I have been incredibly blessed in the fact that I’m able to do what I love, spend time with the people I love, and be proud of who we are as a community.”
Simply seeing the name Urban Mo’s draws attention to the many great community services that this business has taken part in. As a restaurant, Mo’s services include sponsorships, hosting events and participating in civic events. Owner Ramon is no stickler when it comes to community service.
Personally, Ramon is the co-founder of Tantrums & Tiaras, an eventful evening of battling bar queens and drag benefitting Mama’s Kitchen. Ramon also took part in CityFest this month with his contribution of the Dunk-a-Drag Dunk Tank, which raised $1,461 for Mama’s Kitchen. Ramon also co-founded the Hillcrest Mardi Gras event which uses the proceeds raised to provide scholarships to GLBT youth and allies.
Ramon states proudly, “Ultimately, the community is why I wake up every day and get out of bed. I love serving the community and being a part of it in every aspect. I can’t imagine what my life would be like without the people I have surrounded myself with and the people I have yet to meet, as well as all of those who make Hillcrest, Hillcrest.”
