The mission of Uptown Faith Community Service Center is to help the homeless, poor and those in need to become self-supporting members of our community and live with dignity. Services include mail and message services, aiding clients in obtaining California identification cards, providing information and referrals and distributing emergency food, hygiene supplies and clothing donated by sixteen sponsoring church congregations and other community organizations/members. Each month, Uptown provides services to more than 1,000 diverse homeless and very-low income persons. The need for Uptown services has dramatically increased as economic woes persist in our community.

GSDBA Receives Grant from City to Increase Workshops and Create Webinars
The Greater San Diego Business Association has received a grant of $13,380 from the City of San Diego Small Business Enhancement Program , which will be used for presenting workshops and “webinars” to GSDBA’s 800-plus members.
The grant was earmarked for the upcoming fiscal year, starting in early October. Through a similar grant from the city’s Small Business Enhancement Program, the LGBT-supportive chamber of commerce over the past year has conducted 15 workshops on various topics in support of its countywide membership, comprised largely of small-business owners and entrepreneurs.
“We intend to continue that work with more workshops and the creation of webinars that will correlate to their subject matter,” says Tom Luhnow, chief executive officer of GSDBA.
Luhnow adds that the organization will conduct a member survey in late September to determine the most requested topics for the workshops, which have previously focused on marketing strategies, financial planning and on-line social networking presented by business leaders and college professors.
The GSDBA, founded in 1979, currently ranks as the second largest gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and supportive chamber of commerce in the country. For more information about membership and the organization’s business networking groups, call 619-296-4543, or visit the web site: www.gsdba.org.
