Week 10 in the San Diego Hoops basketball league saw Morgan Stanley retake the top spot in the league with a win over Hummingbird/Brians’ while Fusion fell to Kickers in a close game, putting them back in a tie for second place with Moby Dick’s.
Moby Dick’s got the night started off with a solid win in game one over Powerhouse Gym. Moby’s came into the game still riding high from their win over first place Morgan Stanley last week.
“We had a huge game last week, which was a confidence builder because we hadn’t played them because of the fires that bumped everything back,” Moby’s coach David Valenzuela said.
Moby Dick’s kept things fired up, this week taking a 44-15 lead into the second half, with Eric McDaniels scoring an impressive 28 points.
In the second half Moby’s eased up on the scoring and Powerhouse tried to get back in the game but fell short by a score of 73-46. McDaniels picked up an additional 10 points to post 38 points for the night.
“What can I say? I shot so many bricks and Eric made them look like passes,” Valenzuela said of McDaniels’ standout performance. “Eric is just a machine. I think I am going to add an award and call him Mr. Windex because he does a phenomenal job on the boards.”
Charles Yeager-Reiman was the leading scorer for Powerhouse Gym, with 19 points.
In other week 10 action, Morgan Stanley, despite only having five players on hand to take on Hummingbird/Brians’, managed to hang in for a win to secure their uncontested first place standing in the league. It was a great defensive match in the first half, with Hummingbird/Brians’ leading Morgan Stanley by two points at the buzzer.
In the second half Morgan Stanley fought back to take the lead, with Paul Demke leading the charge for his team. Stanley ended up on top by a score of 58-44. Morgan Stanley was led in scoring by Paul Demke with 34 points, while Dwight Dunn led Hummingbird/Brians’ with 19 points.
It was a close first half in game three between The Loft and Pecs, but in the second half The Loft came out with balanced scoring to secure their 42-38 win. The Loft’s leading scorer was Dan Taylor with 16 points. Greg Torrence led Pecs with 21 points.
Last, but certainly not least, Kickers faced Fusion in what was probably the best-played game of the night. In the first half it was all Kickers, with three players in double digits by the half, while Fusion got off to a slow start and trailed Kickers by 19 points.
In the second half it was the Stuart Leung show. Fusion’s Leung led the charge against Kickers to cut down the huge halftime lead. With a few minutes left it was a four-point game, but despite the valiant effort Fusion fell to Kickers, 51-55. Kickers’ leading scorers were Robert Wiggins with 19 points and Jonathan Knapp with 18 points. Stuart Leung led Fusion with 32 points.
Basketball continues its 2003-2004 season this week with games at the Golden Hill Recreation Center starting at 6:00 p.m. and continuing until 10:00 p.m.
