Morgan Stanley and Fusion battle for top spot
Moby Dick’s holding tight at number two spot
Published Thursday, 29-Jan-2004 in issue 840
In week 11 of the San Diego Hoops basketball season Morgan Stanley picked up a key win over Fusion in their bid for the top spot going into playoffs, while Moby Dick’s kept their winning streak alive and capitalized on the Fusion loss to get back into a tie for second place.
The night’s action got underway with the number one ranked Morgan Stanley facing number two-ranked Fusion. Both teams put forward a good defensive effort, with much of Fusion’s effort focused on Morgan Stanley’s center, Dan Newbold, leaving Paul Demke open to lead his team in scoring.
“Paul Demke just kind of had his way with everyone, including me,” said Stuart Leung, Fusion’s coach. “We focused a lot on Dan Newbold and he was missing his shots and we were doing our job that way, but we just couldn’t get over that hump and make our run.”
Throughout the first half, every time Morgan Stanley built up a lead Fusion would get back in there. However, by the half Morgan Stanley managed to squeak out a 24-20 lead.
In the second half Jeff Wyngaert came alive for Fusion, scoring 12 of his 14 points for the game. The teams matched each other point for point and Morgan Stanley took the win, 52-48.
“They are a great team,” Paul Demke, Morgan Stanley’s coach, said following the game. “Stuart and Jeff are tremendous players so we just tried to focus on them. I think really the key was we were able to shut them down the last five minutes of the game and we made our free throws.”
Morgan Stanley’s leading scorer was Paul Demke, with 24 points, while Jeff Wyngaert led Fusion with 14.
“Jeff was doing his part offensively,” Leung said. “He was hitting his shots. I wasn’t disappointed with this game at all. We didn’t play bad, we just played a really good team.”
In game two of the night Powerhouse Gym forfeited the game to The Loft because they did not have enough players to field a team.
In game three, between Kickers and Hummingbird/Brians’ Kickers came on strong from the beginning and finished up the first half with a 14-point lead. Hummingbird\Brians,’ got back in the game in the second half with some balanced scoring from their players, but it was too little too late for Hummingbird\Brians’ as Kickers took the win, 45-28.
In the final game of the night it was Pecs against Moby Dick’s. Moby Dick’s came out strong with some great outside shooting and, at the half, held a 14-point lead. In the second half Allison Luckey got the hot hand and tried to get Pecs back into the game but couldn’t overcome Moby Dick’s inside game. Moby Dick’s went on to win the game, 72-48.
