You have probably seen the GLBT Vote 2004 posters all over our community reminding you that the last day to register to vote is Feb. 16, 2004 with the deadline to submit applications for absentee ballots Feb 24.… With the election coming up on March 2, please remember to register to vote today!
Mayor’s race splits GLBT community
In the 2000 Mayor’s race the GLBT community was about 99 percent in support of one candidate, but not this time. Mayor Dick Murphy has succeeded in getting strong support this time around, including the official endorsement of popular Councilmember Toni Atkins. A GLBT fundraiser in support of Mayor Murphy raised big bucks and drew many GLBT leaders and activists, including Atkins, who introduced and urged the GLBT community to support and vote for Murphy.
Supervisor Ron Roberts is still popular in the GLBT community and many wish he had either announced earlier or not run this time. A GLBT fundraiser for Roberts set for Feb. 18 will be hosted by Ben Dillingham and Bill Beck (who surprisingly sits on Mayor Murphy’s advisory board).
As for candidate millionaire businessman Peter Q. Davis, he is once again receiving little support within the GLBT community.
The recent official report of campaign money raised by the mayoral candidates shows:
Dick Murphy: $413,478
Peter Davis: $283,449 (mostly his own money)
Ron Roberts: $27,240
Some within the GLBT community will be giving financial contributions to both Mayor Murphy and also Supervisor Ron Roberts.
Vince Hall urges 100 percent support of Chris Kehoe’s Senate bid…
I’ve heard some GLBT activists say that while they will vote for Chris Kehoe for state senate they will not volunteer or go out of their way to help her campaign because of her support of a unpopular candidate for her assembly seat.
This is insane.… When will we all start agreeing to disagree with each other respectfully over candidates and issues? While I disagree with Kehoe’s endorsement for the 76th Assembly seat I will support Chris Kehoe 101 percent in her state senate bid. Vince Hall, the popular frontrunning candidate for the “76th” told me he also strongly supports Kehoe and urges everyone to vote and work for her election.… Vince Hall has always supported Kehoe and he feels her election should be one of the Democratic Party’s top priorities.
Calling on all GLBT Irish folk!
San Diego’s annual Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez and Veteran parades all have GLBT contingents and representation. Almost every major city in the USA that holds a St. Patrick’s Day Parade has a GLBT Irish contingent. Isn’t it about time San Diego’s parade also had a local GLBT Irish contingent? It’s long overdue so I urge all our GLBT proud Irish to get yourselves organized and
get a contingent in this year’s parade!

Alano Club’s 20th anniversary celebration this Saturday
I urge your support and attendance at the Live and Let Live Alano Club’s 20th anniversary celebration and dinner this Saturday, Jan. 31, at The Center, 7:00 p.m. sharp. Special guest Supervisor Bevan Dufty is flying in from San Francisco and is considered a future gay mayor of that city. It’s going to be an evening of outstanding entertainment, food and pride.… Honorees include: Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and popular businesswoman Carla Coshow.
The Alano Club has been changing and saving lives in our drug/alcohol recovery community for the last 20 years.… Let’s take the time to show them our deep appreciation. For further information or tickets, phone (619) 813-2787 or (619) 691-7967.
Evonne Schultze’s birthday bash!
This past Sunday, Jess San Roque and I attended “Ms. Democratic Party” herself Evonne Schultze’s birthday party at the Fat City Steakhouse…. It was packed with Democratic Party movers and shakers, elected officials and VIPsDeputy Mayor Toni Atkins officially declared it “Evonne Schultz Day” in San Diego and the huge crowd went wild….
Many of us will never forget that Evonne was one of the first political candidates to stand up and support the “homosexual” community in the 1970s.… She is a great lady, a good friend and loved by many.
Some Oscar movie reviews:
Mystic River — Great movie, one of the best of the year with outstanding acting.… A true murder mystery and Penn and Robbins should both get Oscars!
Lost in Translation — I’m not the only one who has walked out of this boring movie (so has Big Mike of Bourbon Street/Brass Rail and Joe of Flicks). This movie will make you feel like you’re in a coma…. It’s a “very dark comedy” that will make you laugh as much as you would at a funeral.
The Last Samurai — What a beautiful epic of a movie.… A historic triumph of the early days of the Japanese dynasty. Tom Cruise’s acting was one of his best and he got cheated out of much-deserved awards.
Something’s Gotta Give — Run and see this movie, as it’s one of the best comedies of the year.… It’s fabulous fun!

HBO’s popular “Sex and the City” is in its last season and I will miss it greatly, as this is a fabulous show. I try not to miss it every Sunday night. Samantha has become a “gay icon” as she acts like a queen trapped in a beautiful woman’s body.… I just love her. The four women are strong, independent and truly liberated!
Recently Samantha was diagnosed with cancer her hair started falling off.… Her boyfriend then shaved all his long sexy hair off in solidarity.… I cried my eyes out; it was so touching and beautiful.… All the GLBT characters on the show have been fun and outstanding. I already know I’m going to have “Sex and the City” withdrawals….
