Powerhouse picks up big win over Pecs
Struggling team pulls it together in time for playoffs
Published Thursday, 12-Feb-2004 in issue 842
In week 13 of the San Diego Hoops 2003-2004 basketball season play kicked off with Powerhouse Gym facing Pecs, with both teams tied for last place in the league. Having lost to Pecs earlier this season, Powerhouse was looking for revenge and came out playing hard.
Powerhouse got their game on with some fast breaks to jump out to a quick 17-8 lead; Pecs used their first timeout of the game to try and regroup. Powerhouse’s Charles Yeager-Reimen didn’t slow down, leading the team in scoring with 20 points at the half, giving his team a commanding 45-20 point lead over Pecs.
“Charles is ridiculous, he is so awesome,” Powerhouse Gym coach Jackson Addlington said about the first-half performance. “The great thing about Charles is that though he was playing out of his mind and he could have had 20 more points, you could see him driving and making plays and getting everyone else involved, which is key and that’s what this league is all about.”
In the second half Pecs tried to battle back to overcome the deficit with Chris Battistuz and Charissa Kolich leading the scoring for Pecs. Powerhouse kept up their blistering pace on the court, though, and Pecs couldn’t contain the quick offense. In the end, Powerhouse claimed a 77-45 win. Yeager-Reimen led the scoring with 25 points, followed by Addlington who scored 18. Pecs’ leading scorers were Chris Battistuz with 22 points and Charissa Kolich with 18 points.
“Everyone has just started to relax and enjoy the league,” Addlington said about her team’s late-season performance. “Definitely we have the talent, we have some people who are just phenomenal basketball players. Unfortunately, it’s toward the end of the season, but we could have been doing this all year long.”
In game two it was Moby Dicks versus The Loft. The Loft was on fire for most of the first half, sinking shot after shot. Moby Dicks, relying on their stellar inside play, kept themselves in the game and took a 3-point lead into the half.
In the second half, Moby Dicks took off and slowly built on their half-time lead. With the clock working against them, The Loft brought their inside game to life and started cutting into Moby’s lead, but in the end it was Moby’s game, 53-41. Moby Dicks’ leading scorer was Eric McDaniels with 20 points. Dan Taylor led the Loft with 18 points.
In game three, Hummingbird/Brians’ was looking to pull off another upset against team Fusion. Both teams had a great first half, but balanced scoring from the Fusion team resulted in a 9-point half-time lead.
In the second half, Hummingbird/Brians’ put together a great show with their high-powered offense fighting to get them back to tie the game. In what was easily the best game of the night, Fusion pulled together in the final minute of the game to pick up a 57-55 win. Fusion’s leading scorer was Jeff Wyngaert with 14 points. Dwight Dunn chipped in 26 points for the Hummingbird/Brians’ team.
Morgan Stanley and Kickers were on tap for the final game of the night. Morgan Stanley, playing great on both sides of the court, took a 9-point lead into the second half.
Kickers picked up the pace in the second half, turning it into a real game as the teams matched each other point for point on the scoring. In the end it was Morgan Stanley with a 49-40 win over Kickers. Leading the charge for Morgan Stanley was Dan Newbold with 15 points. Kickers high scorer was Robert Wiggins with 16 points.
Basketball season continues this Wednesday with league play leading up to the playoffs, which begin the first week in March. All of the league’s games are played at the Golden Hill Recreation Center, with tip-off for the first game at 6:00 p.m.
