Flag football kicks off in San Diego
Broncos and Gamecocks pick up wins, week one
Published Thursday, 04-Mar-2004 in issue 845
The latest entry in San Diego’s gay sports community, the San Diego American Flag Football League, kicked off their inaugural season this past weekend with back-to-back games at the Linda Vista recreation center starting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Nearly 100 people turned out for the opening game of the season that pitted the Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys against the Dave & Buster’s Broncos.
“We started off a little bit nervous on both sides because it was the first game,” said Danny Jefferson, the Bronco’s coach, following the game. “They just opened up the defense to us. They are a super athletic team, probably the most athletic team out there, and they pulled together in the last half. If we would have kept on going on longer they would have gotten more points on us.”
Weekly practices paid off for the Bronco’s who won the first game of the season by a score of 21-12. Michael Jazmin of the Bronco’s scored the first touch down of the season for his team and also picked up a sack for them on defense. Other standouts for the Bronco’s included Doug Komlenic, who had three interceptions, and Russell Rubio, the team’s quarterback, who led the team to their first victory.
“Our team’s probably got the most overall football knowledge,” Jefferson added. “We’re not the fastest, but we’re all serious about football so that helped. We know the game and we know how to play it.”
Game two of opening day had the Bourbon Street Hurricanes taking on the SDHomePix.com Gamecocks. The Hurricanes took a lead in the first half with Ron Addeo scoring their first touch down. However the Gamecocks took control of the game in the second half, scoring three touchdowns to win the game 18-7.
The flag football season continues this weekend with the Bourbon Street Hurricanes taking on the Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Game two will get under way at 1:00 p.m. with the Dave & Busters Broncos taking on the SDHomePix.com Gamecocks.
