San Diego LGBT Pride Parade scholarships available
San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride is accepting requests from organizations seeking financial assistance to create floats for this summer’s 30th annual Pride parade, scheduled for 11:00 a.m., July 31, along University Avenue in Hillcrest.
The organization’s parade scholarship fund is available to non-profit organizations with annual operating budgets of less than $50,000.
The awards range between $250 and $750 for each qualifying group. Last year’s scholarship recipients were New Creation United Church of Christ and San Ysidro Health Center.
Interested organizations are asked to mail or drop off a written plan and budget for their proposed floats by May 1 to the San Diego LGBT Pride office, located at 1807 Robinson Ave., #106, San Diego, CA., 92103. Women’s lecture series at The Center
Join The Center’s Women’s Resource Center and the SDSU Women’s Studies Department for an eight-week lecture series on the lives of LBT women. All lectures will take place at The Center, Thursday evenings from March 25 through May 13 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Lectures are free and topics include, “Butches, Ballplayers and the Lesbian Taint; Homophobia in Professional Women’s Sports”; “Sex, Crimes, Power and Lesbian Identities in Early Modern Europe”; “Prisms: Through the Eyes of Women of Color”; and “Lesbian Lives in the Context of Culture and Ethnicity.” For more information or a full list of lecture topics, contact Claudia Lucero at (619) 692-2077, ext. 206.
Domestic Partnership forum
Join The Center on April 7 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. for a Community Forum on Domestic Partnership in California. The National Center for Lesbian Rights, The Center, Equality California, and Family Matters are coming together to educate the community on AB 205 (The Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act of 2003), an important new law that will go into effect on January 1, 2005. If you are currently registered as domestic partners or are considering registering, you are encouraged to attend this event at The Center to learn how this new law will affect you. Gay men’s support group
Michael Kimmel, a licensed psychotherapist (and the author of the column “Life Beyond Therapy” which appears in the Gay & Lesbian Times), will be hosting an ongoing support group on Mondays from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
This is a weekly, ongoing support group for gay men, ages 18 and older. Maximum group size: 12 members. New members may join at any time. Each week the group will begin with a check-in of all men present. Following check-in will be a discussion of topics/issues/ concerns generated by those who check-in. Potential topics are likely to include self-esteem, healthy relationships, meeting men, safe sex, monogamy and others.

Farwell Party for Satin
It’s time to send Princes Satin off in Style. The Imperial Court de San Diego will be hosting a farewell party for Princess Royal Satin Styles on March 18 at Flicks. The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. with a show at 8:30 p.m. A $5 donation will be collected at the door, and the event will also feature a buffet, 50/50 raffle and an auction. Money raised from the event will go to benefit the Community Easter Egg Hunt.
California Walk for Recovery
The Walk for Recovery in San Diego was so successful last year that it gained attention statewide. This year the walk has grown to include walks in other cities in California, including a simultaneous Walk at the State Capitol in Sacramento on March 28. This is an important community based event to raise money and increase community awareness on the issue of drug and alcohol treatment services. Last year, over $100,000 was raised and distributed to local treatment agencies as a direct result of the 2003 Walk for Recovery.
There will be entertainment for kids, teens and adults of all ages. The California Walk for Recovery will take place on Sunday, March 28 in Balboa Park. Register online at www.walkforrecovery.org or call (760) 692-2900.
Narcotics Anonymous Spring Gathering
Narcotics Anonymous will host its 13th annual Spring Gathering, April 9-11, at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel, LAX. The gay and lesbian members of Narcotics Anonymous are hosting the event. 2004 Nicky Awards
For nearly 30 years, the Nicky awards have recognized outstanding community and business members in the GLBT and allied communities.
This year, the 2004 Board of Governors of the 28th Annual Nicky Awards will honor the men and women of the San Diego Fire and Police Departments who battled the worst fires in the history of our city. Other very special honorees will be announced.
Tickets are $45 advance, $55 at the door, and $75 VIP. Proceeds benefit the Asian Pacific Islander Community AIDS Project (APICAP), The San Diego LGBT Center, the Human Dignity Foundation and the Imperial Court de San Diego.

Law Day 2004
Free legal advice from local attorneys will be offered as part of the San Diego Public Library’s sixth annual Law Day. Each year, hundreds of San Diegans take part in the event and receive private counsel on such topics as bankruptcy law, family law, civil litigation, personal injury, medical malpractice, consumer protection, immigration, criminal law and other legal issues. The nonprofit, community event is open to the public.
Attorneys participating in Law Day are in good standing with the state bar of California and licensed in state and federal courts of California. The attorneys have proven to be experienced, qualified professionals with a strong commitment to volunteerism in the community. The Center Hosts ‘Moms for Marriage’
The Women’s Resource Center at The Center will host Moms for Marriage, an opportunity for mothers of GLBT daughters and sons to come together to show their support for marriage equality. Don’t miss this opportunity to unite with other moms for an evening of letter writing to elected officials, family members and newspapers. Everything from sample letters to coffee and cookies will be available.

March LGBT Community Coalition Breakfast
The LGBT Community Coalition Breakfast starts promptly at 7:30 a.m. on the third Friday of each month. The March breakfast will be held on March 19 and will focus on marriage equality with updates on the proposed federal marriage amendment – what is happening locally and nationally, and how the community can become involved in the movement. Speakers will include representatives from San Diegans Against Marriage Discrimination, a broad-based coalition dedicated to defeating this amendment.
