Published Thursday, 25-Mar-2004 in issue 848
Four weeks into its inaugural season, the San Diego American Flag Football League is still going strong, and the Dave and Buster’s Broncos have established themselves as the team to beat. This week’s games featured a rematch of the week one games, in which the Bronco’s dominated in their game against the Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys, walking away with a 21-12 victory.
This time around the Cowboys proved that the three weeks of league play has strengthened their team. In the first half, they took a commanding 21-6 lead over the Bronco’s
“We played with emotion, we played with spirit and kind of knocked them off their game from the get-go,” John Hernandez, the Cowboy’s team captain said following their game. “It was a group effort, nobody stood out. We keep progressing every week, we keep getting better and better.”
The second half belonged to the Broncos though, as their defense held the Cowboys scoreless, giving the offense a chance to pull ahead and take a 33-21 lead to win the game and preserve their perfect season record.
“They came out so organized in the first half,” Danny Jefferson, the Broncos’ captain said. “They were really coordinated and they pretty much blew us out the first half.”
However Jefferson’s team was able to turn things around, “Second half, we came out, our team pulled our heads together and just took over. They did a really good job.”
Turning in an MVP performance for the Broncos was Martin Cherrier with two touchdowns, one that was a score off of an interception. Cherrier also contributed on the defensive side of the game with three sacks. Michael Jazmin was the player who eventually put it over the top for the Broncos, scoring the final touchdown of the game to put his team over the top.
“Then we just kind of fell apart in the second half,” Hernandez added. “We are working on keeping it in the game mentally in the second half. You get complacent, you get all excited but you’ve got to remember there are two halves to every game.”
In game two, the SDHomepix.com Gamecocks were able to repeat their week one performance and pick up a 28-24 win against the Bourbon Street Hurricanes.
The 2004 Flag Football season continues this weekend at the Linda Vista Recreation Center. Kickoff for the first game is at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. for game two. The March 27 match-ups include the Hurricanes against the Cowboys in game one and the Broncos and Gamecocks in game two.
