Interior decorating for the couch potato

Are you thinking about redecorating, but weren’t born with the “decorating gene?” Long before “Queer Eye” became an overnight mega-hit, decorating shows featuring gay men (and some straight folks, too) have been a staple on cable’s Home and Garden Television (HGTV), Discovery Home and TLC networks. Below are our picks for the shows that provide the most useful home style tips — and more drama than you can shake a Frazee® paint stick at.
Designers’ Challenge (HGTV): Three high-end design teams compete for a large redesign budget, typically $20,000 or more — for a single room.
Designed to Sell (HGTV): Offers tips for inexpensively improving your home’s chances of appealing to buyers.
Decorating Cents (HGTV): Useful examples of color, fabric and texture coordination, plus furniture arrangement tips. Just skip the “Trash to Treasure” segment.
This Small Space (HGTV): Organization and furniture layout tips for condos, apartments and cottage-style homes without a lot of room to spare.
Design on a Dime (HGTV): A team of three designers transform a room on a $1,000 budget, much like “Decorating Cents” — and host Lee Snijders is quite easy on the eyes.
The Christopher Lowell Show (DCHOME): Walking stereotype Lowell minces his way through an hour of faux finishes, oversized furniture and ostentatious fabrics.
Trading Spaces (TLC): Neighbors swap houses and spend a weekend redecorating a room in each other’s homes with the help of two designers, a carpenter and a $1,000 budget.
