Underground film: The Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park is hosting a film series in April and May dedicated to the epic – historic, mythic or imagined events depicted with grandeur, spectacle and extravagant settings. Women’s night with the stars: The L.A. On the banks of the Volga: Leos Janacek’s Katya Kabanova, an intensely atmospheric and eloquently compelling drama sung in Czech, plays tonight at the San Diego Opera at 7:00 p.m. The opera tells the tale of Katya, trapped in a loveless marriage to the spineless Tichon. Book learning: The Oceanside Museum of Art’s current show is “Brighton Press: Art of the Book”. Brighton Press books, created by a staff of artists, poets and craftspeople since 1985, are made by hand and are published in editions that range from 10 to 100 copies. These books are sought after by art collectors, bibliophiles and print collectors, and have also been acquired and exhibited by over 70 museums and libraries. Crystal clear: Billy Crystal draws on his personal experiences in 700 Sundays: Billy Crystal, A Life in Progress tonight at 8:00 p.m. at the La Jolla Playhouse, located at 2910 La Jolla Village Dr. Written and performed by the comic, Crystal relates his times as a scrawny 16 year-old performing in New York City comedy clubs, through to his Saturday Night Live days and his gig as host of the Academy Awards.
