Powerhouse shakes up women’s division
Open division teams in tie for first place
Published Thursday, 12-Jun-2003 in issue 807
Cloudy skies and drizzle may have made for some wet playing conditions, but it wasn’t enough to slow down the teams in the America’s Finest City Softball League (AFCSL) this weekend in Poway and Mira Mesa. In the Open Division only D3 and D4 teams played this weekend, giving the other teams a much-needed rest. On the women’s side of things Powerhouse Gym broke out of the three-way tie for first place to take the lead in the B Division.
With an 8-5 win against Aberration and a 15-5 win against The Boxing Club, Powerhouse once again proved that they are the team to beat in the Women’s B Division. While Aberration was about to post an impressive 22-7 win against Ashley’s A’s they still have dropped down into second place in the division. After losing to Moby Dick’s, 11-2, in a game that does not hamper their B Division Standing, the Ono Sushi Sliders lost a 14-13 game against the Boxing Club that went into extra innings. The loss drops the Sliders to third place in the division and half a game out of second.
Hairspray still leads the Women’s C Division. This week they picked up a win the easy way when last place C Rec team The Flame was a no-show for their game. Then Hairspray took to the field to play Hamburger Mary’s, who they beat, 9-4. Second place C Division team Clean Sweep had the weekend off, and third place Big O picked up some ground on them by beating Hamburger Mary’s, 6-1, and taking advantage of another Flame forfeit to improve their record to 11-8.
In both D3 and D4 of the Open Division there are ties for first place. In D3 Brians’ Bears suffered a blow, going into this weekend in first place only to lose two games back to back. First it was at the hands of Hamburger Mary’s in a 9-8 game. They then had a chance to avenge the loss against Shameless, the second place team in the division, only to fall to them by one run, 13-12. Shameless went on to pick up a second win against Moby Dick’s Trojans to improve their record to 12-4, good enough for a tie for first place with the Bears.
The D4 teams this week were facing the tough competition of the D3 teams. Team Star beat Interactive Male, 7-5, to pick up a win and put them in a first place tie with The Center Starz, who fought back after giving up 13 runs in the first inning to lose to The Abbey, 19-12. The Xila Zephyrs blew out the Viejas Fire in a 10-4 ball game and, last but not least, the Bourbon Street Gators picked up their third win in a row against Interactive Male, 9-8, to put them in a tie for third place with Xila, with 4-11 records.
Softball season continues next week, with all of the teams from the Open and Women’s Divisions taking the fields in Poway at the Sportsplex and in Mira Mesa at Hourglass Field. For a complete schedule of games, visit the league online at www.afcsl.org.
