Homeless youth fundraiser
This year the kids from the San Diego Youth & Community Services’ Storefront Homeless Shelter are offering businesses an opportunity to support the Storefront while promoting their business in the 2004 LGBT Pride parade. The youth from the Storefront Homeless Shelter will be making banners for sponsors that they will walk with or place on their float for the Pride parade, where they will be seen by some 150,000 parade attendees. Sponsors will also be invited to ride on the Storefront float.
San Diego Youth & Community Services has come to the aid of homeless teenagers since 1970. Their Storefront emergency homeless shelter and drop-in center are places where young people can come after school and also find a safe place to spend the night. The Storefront has capacity for 20 beds, and 20 percent of the young people who arrive are from the GLBT community.
For more information on advertising your business with the Storefront Homeless Shelter, call Judy at (619) 221-8600, ext. 227.
The Center Launches AB 205 and Marriage Education Campaign
The Center is proud to announce an exciting new project that will help educate the GLBT community and the broader San Diego community about California’s enhanced domestic partnership registry, as well as same-sex marriage. The Center has speakers available now to speak about this vital issue.
The Center’s speakers can provide information to a business that needs to know how AB 205 will impact them as they consider providing domestic partnership health benefits. Speakers can also present to employee groups, social groups, churches, colleges/universities, professional groups, etc.
To become a part of this vital education effort, please consider becoming a volunteer speaker. No previous experience is necessary. Attorneys, accountants and financial advisors are particularly needed to speak to these professional groups. The next speaker’s bureau training will be on May 20 at 6:00 p.m. at The Center.
To volunteer or for more information on obtaining a speaker from the Speaker’s Bureau at The Center, contact Amber Cyphers at (619) 692-2077, ext. 148.
Victory celebration at The Center
This year, May 17 will mark a historic first for the GLBT community. Massachusetts will begin to issue marriage license applications to same-sex couples on that day, and The Center is going to celebrate!
The Center invites the entire community to join them for a grand victory celebration on Monday, May 17, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at The Center, 3909 Centre St. This wedding-like reception will be complete with appetizers, wedding cake, champagne, music and merriment. This will be one celebration you won’t want to miss!
While we all still have a tremendous amount of work to do to secure equality for GLBT Americans, these two wins – one in Massachusetts and one here in San Diego – are the realization of years of work. These gains are historic ones, and deserve to be celebrated. The Center is proud to host this community-wide celebration and urges everyone to join them.
For more information, contact AJ Davis at (619) 692-2077, ext. 212.
