Broncos are on top in flag football
Regular season play wraps up in SDFFL

San Diego’s gay flag football league wrapped up its 2004 regular season play this past weekend with games at the Linda Vista Recreation Center. The final standing in the league will determine which teams will be seeded for the championship tournament, taking place on Saturday, June 5.
In the final week of play, the Bourbon Street Hurricanes picked up a big win by defeating the league powerhouse, Dave & Buster’s Broncos. The Broncos have dominated in the league this season, going into the final week of play with only one loss on their record. The Hurricanes, however, who have been coming on strong in the final weeks of regular season play, capped off with a victory in San Diego’s first annual flag football tournament, the Surf & Turf Bowl, held two weeks ago.
“I think our team’s getting stronger and stronger, just like Hamburger Mary’s is getting stronger,” said Ivan Solis, the captain of the Hurricanes, following their 28-21 victory over the Broncos. “This team from the beginning to now is a whole different team. Anything can happen; we’ve proven ourselves in the tournament so things can change here.”
For the Broncos, team captain Danny Jefferson said that his team is going to use the weeks between now and the June 5 championship tournament to recover from injuries and get back on track. The Broncos started the season out with a five game winning streak, and as the number-one seeded team they are looking to dominate in the championship.
Looking to the championship, Jefferson said, “We’re going to come out with our heads in the game. We are going to come out healthy. All of our guys should be good to go and we are going to be organized like we were during the first five games of the season.”
In game two this week; the Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys faced the SDHomepix.com Gamecocks, where they handily defeated them in a 52-12 ballgame. The Cowboys faltered early on in the season, but turned things around to finish the season on a five-game win streak and with the number-two seed going into the championship tournament.
The Cowboys will be facing the Hurricanes in the first round of tournament play on June 5.
Game times for the championship tournament have not been set yet, but all of the games will be played at the Linda Vista Recreation Center. In the semifinals, the Cowboys will play the Hurricanes and the Broncos will face the Gamecocks. The losers of those games will play each other in a third place consolation game and the winners will face each other in the fourth and final game of the day for the league championship.
