Standard First Aid and CPR course
Ms. San Diego Leather 2004 is proud to sponsor a Standard First Aid/CPR course instructed by Karen Yew at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday June 6, at the Bienestar office located at 3020 North Park Way. This class is limited to 12 individuals and there is a $40 course fee. This is a fundraiser for the Ms. San Diego Leather Travel Fund. After costs of materials, a percentage will go to Bienestar and the MsSDL Travel Fund.
This class is approximately six hours in length, with breaks in between various lessons. Upon completion of the course, members who pass a written examination will receive their Standard First Aid/CPR Certification Card.
Due to the limited number of students, participants must reserve a seat ahead of time by emailing Yew at MsSanDiegoLeather2004 @yahoo.com.
Volunteers needed for Camp Laurel: deadline May 30
The 11th annual Camp Laurel needs volunteer counselors and medical staff to participate in the weeklong camp for children living with HIV/AIDS. The application deadline is May 30, so act fast! Volunteers are needed for the Summer Camp June 18-25 and the Teen Adventure Camp July 30-August 6. Summer Camp volunteers enjoy a program filled with various camp activities including hiking, swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, art and crafts, sports and laughter, and provide campers with support, safety and lots of fun. Teen Adventure Camp needs volunteers to help lead campers into doing surprising new activities each day. Past adventures have included surfing, creating a Public Service Announcement and recording songs – activities these teens would not get to do in their everyday lives.
Camp Laurel is a 501c3 nonprofit formed in response to the urgent need for support groups and programmed activities for children living with HIV and AIDS. Camps are provided free of charge to over 600 children each year. For additional information, contact Melissa Cummings, director of volunteers, at (323) 663-5005; fax (323) 653-0558; 8489 W 3rd St., Suite 1003 in Los Angeles, CA 90048; or email at mcummings@camplaurel.org.
Clean up the canyon
On Sunday, June 6, at 9:00 a.m., come out and show your pride in the neighborhood in an effort to clean up the canyon in and around the Vermont Street Bridge. A layer of trash and shopping carts covers the canyon’s beauty, and community members want to do something to change that.
Bring work shoes, trash bags and gloves. (If you don’t have them, they will be provided.)

Ebony Pride membership drive
Like many nonprofit organizations, a good source of Ebony Pride’s revenue comes from its members. By purchasing an Ebony Pride membership, you secure the financial future of the organization so that they can continue to represent and work for the GLBT community of San Diego.
This year they need your support more than ever. With all of the budget cuts going on, a lot of funds for nonprofit organizations are drying up fast. To continue their mission to represent the GLBT African American community, Ebony Pride needs your help. By becoming a member, you get discounts at all Ebony Pride events.
It’s a great way to support the GLBT African American community. Membership is only $10 for 1 year. Becoming a member is easy – contact Ebony Pride at info@ebonypride.org for more information.

The concerts take place Friday, June 11, and Saturday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m. A silent auction fundraiser will be held Saturday starting at 6:00 p.m.

Tickets are available from the Lyceum box office or at Obelisk bookstore. In aChord is a 14-voice ensemble under the artistic direction of Kenny Ard. A jazz trio will accompany the performance. The event – open to all families – takes place Friday, June 4, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Center, located at 3909 Centre St.
The evening features activities for all ages, including dance lessons, a raffle, a hoola hoop contest, a cake walk, crafts and prizes. Attire is 1950s style – jeans and white T-shirts or poodle skirts.

Coffee and conversation with Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins
The Center’s Women’s Resource Center kicks off a new monthly event, called “Coffee and Conversation With Cool Women”, with Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins. The monthly event will feature a different active woman involved in the GLBT community and will follow a talk show-like format with a host and an audience. The event is meant to celebrate the life and career of each featured woman and provides an opportunity for the community to get to know her.
Atkins represents the City of San Diego and chairs the Workforce Partnership board, serves on the Metropolitan Transit Development Board, the San Diego Association of Governments Regional Housing Task Force and the City-County Joint Homeless Task Force. She served on the staff of former Third District City Councilmember Christine Kehoe, for all seven of her years in office, as a policy analyst on issues of housing, economic development, small business, infrastructure, public utilities, planning and land use, and allocations for the Community Development Block Grant. Atkins also served as the liaison for the GLBT community, for senior groups, women’s organizations and schools located in the district, and as a staff representative to the communities of South Park, Golden Hill, North Park, Burlingame, Normal Heights, Kensington and Talmadge.
This event is free. Any donations will benefit the Women’s Resource Center. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Coffee will be provided for a small donation.
