New Mexico company gives gifts to gay and lesbian couples married in Mass.
Same-sex marriages portend boost in wedding industry revenue

SANTA FE (AP) – A New Mexico company offered free wedding gifts to gay and lesbian couples married in Massachusetts, requiring only a copy of the wedding certificate and a note saying what marriage means to them.
Santa Fe-based Nambe, known for its elegant, modern designs of housewares including bowls, serving trays and vases, offered married gay and lesbian couples its Nambe Planar crystal bowl set in an offer that lasted from May 17 through May 24.
Bob Borden, vice president of design at Nambe, said the company is one of several highly registered brands for bridal gifts, and the offer was reaching out to a new demographic group of married couples.
“We’re a company that celebrates weddings, and it fit right within our overall marketing scheme. To judge what is right and wrong is really not our responsibility,” Borden said. “For us, the more people that get married the better.”
Same-sex couples began exchanging marriage vows in Massachusetts on May 17, marking the first time a state has granted gays and lesbians the right to marry.
Borden said he is not sure how many gay and lesbian couples participated in the offer, but said the response from the community has been positive.
“We’ve gotten nothing but positive response from people all over the map, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has given us a lot of support,” Borden said.
Offering free gifts is nothing new for Nambe, said marketing director Suzanne O’Leary Lopez. The company once donated free crystal salt and pepper shakers for a charity event in Dallas and donates locally to schools and other foundations.
Lopez said the company chose to offer the Planar bowl set as a way to highlight their new designs for young, married couples.
“We chose this piece to promote the brand in the bridal market. It really exposes the recipient to our crystal line and all of our different products,” Lopez said.
Nambe is sold in outlets in New Mexico as well as department stores such as Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Neiman-Marcus nationwide.
