Task force chooses site for District Three flagship library
On May 27, the District Three Flagship Library Task Force, by a 10-3 vote, chose the Carter Reese and Associates project on University Avenue between Idaho and Oregon streets in North Park as their official recommendation for the site of the new flagship library for the district.
The Carter Reese proposal calls for a multi-level building that would integrate the library with the new home of Deaf Community Services, as well as housing and retail. The project is designed to include approximately 90 units of affordable housing for the deaf to provide a sense of community for the hearing disabled.
The current timeline calls for the library to open in 2008. Definitive time lines, however, have yet to be confirmed.

The Center and the Gay Men’s Health Program host ‘Poz 5-Minute Man’
The Center’s Positive Action Program and the Gay Men’s Health Program of Family Health Centers of San Diego will host “Poz 5-Minute Man” on Saturday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m. at the Joyce Beers Community Center in Hillcrest’s Uptown Shopping District.
“Poz 5-Minute Man” is a new and interactive chance for HIV-positive gay and bisexual men to connect with each other in a casual, pressure-free and fun environment. While the Gay Men’s Health Program’s “5-Minute Man” program has been hugely popular, this is the first time the event is being offered specially for HIV-positive men. There is no cost to participate in this event.
After arrivals and initial mingling, participants are seated and have five minutes to chat with and get to know the person next to them. Every five minutes, the men shift places to meet the next guy. This goes on until everyone has had a chance to meet everyone else. The participants anonymously indicate people they would like to meet and the staff helps facilitate future contact.
For more information about the “Poz 5-Minute Man” event, call (619) 692-2077, ext. 133 or (619) 515-2424, ext. 2913.

AIDS Walk San Diego marks 15 years
On Sunday, Sept. 26 at 8:00 a.m., Balboa Park will be filled with thousands of San Diegans as the 15th Annual AIDS Walk San Diego kicks off. The 5K (3.1 mile) walk and 10K run attract an estimated 10,000 people each year raising funds to support local HIV and AIDS service providers.
This year, due to a scheduling conflict, AIDS Walk will take place one week earlier than its regularly scheduled date. This change will not affect the event time or program itself.
Ongoing state and federal budget cuts to AIDS/HIV funding have put the County of San Diego in a critical state. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that San Diegans get out in support of AIDS Walk. In San Diego alone, one new person is diagnosed with HIV every day.
Everyone is encouraged to come out, show their support and help the San Diego community raise needed funds for HIV and AIDS. Participants may register online or by calling AIDS Walk San Diego at (619) 291-9255.
