The pass, which costs $28, applies to San Diego Pride’s two-day festival at Marston Point, July 26-27; Ebony Pride, Aug. 23, also at Marston Point; and Latin Pride, Sept. 27, at the corner of Park Blvd. and President’s Way. Ebony Pride will be selling the passes at North Park Postal, 2936 Lincoln Ave. They will also be available soon at various retail outlets. Free women’s jazz improvisational workshop
Women still remain largely out of sight in the jazz world. Turiya Mareya, a professional jazz artist for over 30 years is seeking to mentor and inspire women musicians to move to the next level of art and professionalism. Mareya is offering a weekly class for pianists, drummers, horn players, string players and vocalists. The class uses a variety of techniques pulled from the traditions of American jazz, African, Latin American and world music to stimulate creativity and develop improvisational skills. Classes are held at the WorldBeat Cultural Center, 2100 Park Blvd. The classes are free, but students are asked to donate either time or resources to the WorldBeat Center. For class times or to register, call Turiya Mareya at (619) 230-1190.
Women’s independent music show, June 26
Thursday, June 26, at 8:00 p.m., don’t miss Indie By Design (IBD), a showcase of independent-minded musicians making music on their own terms. The show will feature Danielle Lo Presti and The Masses, Anna Dowdell, Eve Selis, Amy Garcia and Velveteen Rabbit. Each band goes on for a 20 minute set, starting at 8:00 p.m. then rotating through a second set. This allows the audience to enjoy all five artists in the space wherein they would typically enjoy just one, making it an ideal environment to experience new music while interacting with the bands. IBD was created to help stimulate a growing awareness of some of the exceptional, under-appreciated musical talent in San Diego. Don’t miss IBD at Dizzy’s, 344 Seventh Ave., downtown. For more information, call (858) 270-7467.
