Gay and lesbian runners ace annual water station contest again

Front Runners San Diego has once again won first place in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Water Station Contest. The marathon took place on Sunday, June 1, with over 21,000 runners participating. The first place prize for the water station includes a $1000 check for the club. This year’s win marks the third time that the Front Runners have taken first place at the 25-mile marker of the marathon. Celebrating this year’s theme of the ’70s, many of the 150 volunteers wore flared pants, tie-dye fashions, afros, and lots of polyester.
The station was located in the shadows of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, along the final stretch of the 26-mile run. Racers were treated to music featuring hypnotic disco beats as well as fabulous decorations such as a life-size custom love van, hand-made twirling mirror balls and rainbow flags. Breathless from the spectacle and re-energized to reach the finish line less than a mile away, many of the racers high-fived the volunteers and voiced their approval.
All of the volunteers at the Front Runners’ water station were automatically entered into a drawing for a free trip to Hawaii this year. The lucky winner of the drawing was Michael Brown, a new member of Front Runners, who came out to support the club and competitors in the race.
Water station co-captain Des Kelly pronounced the water station a smashing success and thanked all of the volunteers for coming together as a team. Water station decorator Tom Dredge noted that they promised a party and delivered one like none experienced before.
Front Runners co-chair Adrienne Schlang added, “We were motivated to support our runners and the running community. There is no doubt that the wonderful spirit and infectious enthusiasm of all of our volunteers was key to meeting those goals and to the success of this demanding water station.”
Front Runners San Diego invites people of all athletic abilities to join them for healthful, fun walks and runs in Balboa Park. For more information about Front Runners San Diego, visit their website at www.frsd.org or call (619) 835-9131.
