Whatever you do, get thee off the couch and enjoy the summer!

Coronado’s annual Independence Day Half Marathon and 5K Run or Walk kicks off the Island festivities bright and early at 6:30 a.m., on Sunday, July 4, at Tidelands Park. Summer fun – the always hot list
The beauty of living in San Diego is that there is no shortage of fun things to do – it’s just a matter of knowing where to look for them. Here are a few reccurring events that should be on everyone’s hot list of things to do.
Twilight in the Park
During the summer, The Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park hosts a free concert series on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays starting at 6:00 p.m. that is guaranteed to make for a cool night out. The one-hour performances feature local, national and international artists playing everything from flamenco and jazz to barbershop quartet and banjo bands.
Bring a picnic basket or some take-out and it makes for a great date idea.
Beach days
With miles and miles of beaches and palm trees, San Diego is the living embodiment of what people think of when they imagine southern California. Two beaches have captured the heart of GLBT San Diego: Black’s Beach and Coronado Beach. To the north, Blacks Beach in La Jolla is San Diego’s infamous nude beach, and clothes are optional for those who are a little less daring. In the last couple of years, Coronado Beach has become a popular stomping ground for people who do want to make sure they have tan lines when they get done at the beach.
Ray at Night
The second Saturday of every month, North Park hosts San Diego’s most popular night out with the arts. Ray at Night closes down Ray Street in North Park as galleries throw their doors open to the public with wine and fresh new exhibits each month. Live bands and local dance groups also highlight the monthly gathering that makes for a great kick off to a night out with friends or a novel way to take someone special out on a date. Ray at Night runs from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Dog park
Nothing beats the dog days of summer like a trip to Dog Park in beautiful Balboa Park. Whether it’s an afternoon outing with your pooch alone or with friends, hanging out in the popular dog park is a great way to leave the stresses of the world behind and enjoy a great game of fetch while watching the doggies socialize.
Homemade apple pie
Just a short drive east from San Diego lies the beautiful mountain community of Julian. The tiny town is home to antique stores, candy shoppes and most importantly, some of the best homemade apple pie you can find in this part of the country. Julian’s economy has suffered since last year’s fires, so make the drive, eat the pie to help this little town thrive.
Hillcrest Farmers Market
Whether you are looking for fresh flowers or fresh produce, the Sunday morning Hillcrest Farmers Market, located in the DMV parking lot on Normal Street, is a great way to get the day started off right.
Adult skate
Get retro every Tuesday night at Skateworld in Linda Vista from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Skaters might not have on the velour pullovers and legwarmers like they used to (but they are always welcome) but classic tunes from the ’70s and ’80s and the disco ball are certain to take you back a few years. Call (858) 560-9349 for more information.
Tue$ Nite Out
“Tue$ Nite Out” has become a Hillcrest tradition with a collection of neighborhood restaurants, bars and retailers offering what they have – for less – every Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Participating establishments place a “Tue$ Nite Out” sign in their window to make your quest for all things good and cheap easy to spot. Hamburger Mary’s, Babette Schwartz, The Crest Cafe and Lalo’s are just a few options to check out.
Star gazing
Not getting to see enough of your favorite stars during the summer rerun season? On the first Wednesday of every month, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center planetarium presents “The Sky Tonight” at 7:00 p.m. The show is geared towards backyard astronomers, children and anyone who wants to impress their date while stargazing. There will be free telescope viewing after the show, hosted by the San Diego Astronomy Association, weather permitting. Tickets are $6.75 for adults and $5.50 for children. Call (619) 238-1233 for further information.
That Thing
San Diego’s Museum of Contemporary Art hosts TNT (Thursday Night Thing) the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at their downtown location, 1001 Kettner Blvd. The ongoing program features film and video in the galleries and live local music on the outdoor plaza. Admission is free, but a $3 donation is welcome. Call (619) 234-1001 for more information.
First Fridays on Fern
South Park stores and joints are open late tonight, as part of First Fridays on Fern (and Juniper too), with refreshments and special sales. The event takes place on the first Friday of every month. Go to Fern and Juniper streets in South Park to explore.
Tap your inner artist
Escape from the hectic pace of everyday life and express your creative side in a relaxing and inspirational venue. The San Diego Art Department offers a multitude of classes in many disciplines, including pottery, sculpture, painting, mosaic, jewelry and puppet making. Call (619) 299-4278 for more information. SDAD is located at 3830 Ray St. in North Park.
On Your Mark, Get set,Go!
When the pulse is racing and you need that adrenaline fix that sitting on the beach won’t bring (even Blacks Beach) – sometimes a sports activity is called for. There are plenty of choices, so get yer skates on.
