First Fridays on Fern: South Park establishments are open late as part of First Fridays on Fern (and Juniper too), with refreshments and special sales. The event takes place on the first Friday of every month. Go to Fern and Juniper streets in South Park to explore.

Babes on boards: Don’t miss the last day of the U.S. Surfing Championships, taking place at Oceanside Pier and Beach starting at 9:00 a.m. The invitational includes not only the top surfing talent from around the country, but live music, sponsor displays and fireworks in celebration of Fourth of July. Truth and politics: In conjunction with La Jolla Playhouse’s production of David Edgar’s acclaimed two-play cycle, Continental Divide, the Playhouse presents a series of panel discussions on topics relevant to the plays and the current political environment, hosted by San Diego’s leading journalists and writers. The discussions take place immediately following select Saturday and Sunday matinee performances, include a brief question and answer period and are free and open to the public. Fireworks!: After the grill’s died down and the cake’s all gone, amble over to the Shelter Island, Harbor Island and north Embarcadero area for the annual 20-minute fireworks display launched off of three floating barges. If that isn’t enough, check out the Mission Bay Yacht Club’s display near El Carmel Point at 8:45 p.m. At 5:00 p.m., the yacht club holds a Parade of Boats with Dixieland music and children’s activities. Insight seminar: At 7:00 p.m., the Old Globe Theatre hosts an Insight Seminar for As You Like It, the newest play in their summer Shakespeare series.
