Flame set to reopen by Pride weekend
Complete overhaul includes two dance floors, three bars and VIP lounge

The Flame will reopen Friday, July 23, in time for San Diego’s Pride weekend. The new owners, Nicholas Moede, Richard Britton and Butch Von Ryan of Numbers, have completely remodeled the interior, though they will keep the original art deco The Flame sign, a historical landmark, out front. Like Numbers across the street, The Flame will feature different theme nights and cater to a mixed clientele.
“The Flame is a great name, and it’s a great location,” Moede said about why the owners of Numbers bought The Flame after previous owner Carla Coshow retired last spring. “We really want to put San Diego on the map for clubbing and for going out and having a good time.”
The owners have spent the last several months completely overhauling The Flame’s interior and have constructed two separate dance floors, a lounge area, two DJ booths and three bars. They are also busy constructing a smoking patio at the front of the building.
“We are looking into putting a bar in the basement, but that is one or two years in the future,” Moede added.
The venue features more open-air space, video screens, an expansive new sound system and a VIP section.
“People will get a feel for it when they walk in,” Moede said of the refurbished interior. “It’s fresh and very cutting edge design-wise, in the way it’s set up and in the lighting.”
In time for the summer influx of out-of-towners and locals gearing up for Pride, The Flame will be open on Friday and Saturday nights, and new nights will be added as the summer progresses. “Each night will be something different,” Moede said. “Friday nights will cater mostly to the boys and be called ‘Bad Puppies’ which is a spin-off on Numbers’ ‘Bad Kitties’ night. Saturday nights will be called ‘Candy’, which will be geared for the ladies.”
Both Bad Puppies and Candy will feature hip-hop on one dance floor and club and house music on the other. The lounge area will play a mixture of ’80s, old school and mellower music, Moede said.
