Sci-Fi theater sports: From July 30 to Aug. 14, San Diego TheatreSports’ improv competition, where every scene and song is made up on the spot by two teams of improvisers taking suggestions from the audience, will be sci-fi related, generating a fictional humorous episode of “Star Trek”. The show takes place every Friday and Saturday from 7:45 to 9:45 p.m. at The FunHouse, located at 6822 El Cajon Blvd. Tickets are $10-15. Call (619) 465-SHOW for more information.
Spirit of Stonewall rally: This weekend’s Pride celebration kicks off with the annual Spirit of Stonewall rally taking place at 7:30 p.m. at the Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. For this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the keynote speaker is Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality Florida, and a commemorative musical “drag tribute” with songs that frame the eras of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and today. Pre-parade 5K: If you have time for a quick morning jog through the park, don’t miss Frontrunner’s annual free 5K run and 1.5 mile walk “Run and Stride With Pride” starting at Sixth and Laurel streets in Balboa Park at 8:00 a.m. For more information, call (619) 525-3100.
Pride parade: It’s here and it’s queer! The 30th anniversary San Diego LGBT Pride parade steps off promptly at 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of University Avenue and Normal Street in Hillcrest, then travels west to Sixth Avenue and south to Upas Street, where it turns into Balboa Park and ends at Marston Point. There will be over 200 colorful entries this year, and the projected attendance for San Diego’s largest civic event is 150,000 people.
Pride festival: Immediately following the Pride parade, the gates to the Pride festival at Marston Point open, where food, drink, dancing, vendor and information booths, live entertainment and plenty of eye candy await. The festival runs from 12:00 noon to 10:00 p.m. on July 31 and from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Aug. 1. Admission is $12 for a one-day pass and $20 for a two-day pass. Wine tasting: Need a break from the Pride crowds? Escape to Temecula for a day of wine tasting. The Callaway Coastal Vineyard in Temecula holds daily wine tours starting at 11:00 a.m. Sample a variety of oak-aged wines, with most bottles under $15. k.d. lang: End Pride weekend with a trip to the Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park to see the GLBT community’s favorite crooner perform. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. Come early and enjoy the pre-show entertainment featuring comedian Vickie Shaw. Tickets are $46.50 general admission or $100 for an assigned seat. Organic music: The Spreckels Organ Society’s 17th annual International Summer Organ Festival continues its free Monday evening concerts featuring artists from around the globe bringing their unique styles to the world’s largest outdoor pipe organ at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. Tonight at 7:30 p.m. is Pierre Pincemaille, the organist of St. Denis in Paris, one of the most famous cathedrals in France. Call (619) 702-8138 for more information.
A day at the races: The Del Mar racetrack has been a destination location for the Hollywood and power elite since 1937. The 2004 season features 43 racing days, with no races on Tuesdays. The grandstand and clubhouse offer excellent views, and are close to the betting windows. There a several places to eat on site, including the famed private Turf Club, the Stretch Run Grill or traditional concession stands for hot dogs and beer. Post time is 2:00 p.m. on all days except Four O’clock Fridays, when the time is moved to 4:00 p.m. Admission is $3-80. Call (858) 755-1141 for more information.

Tap your inner artist: The next session of the San Diego Art Department starts this week, offering a multitude of classes in many disciplines, including pottery, sculpture, painting, mosaic, jewelry and puppet making. Twilight in the park: Relax and enjoy evening concerts in Balboa Park from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Organ Pavilion. The one-hour programs feature local artists performing everything from flamenco and jazz to barbershop quartet and banjo bands.
