Softball season nears end
Creative Futons takes championship in Women’s C Recreational
Published Thursday, 26-Jun-2003 in issue 809
There is only one week of makeup games left for the America’s Finest City Softball League before the 2003 season comes to a close. This week there were no games at Hourglass Park in Mira Mesa, and with six forfeits, there were only a handful of games played at the Poway Sportsplex.
Creative Futons locked up the championship in the Women’s C Recreation division this week with a pair of impressive wins. Creative Futons started off the day with a 14-0 shutout against Six Degrees. They followed up with another stellar performance, beating Hamburger Mary’s, 16-3. The big excitement will be the battle for second place in C Rec, where Hamburger Mary’s and In Contempt are currently tied. Mary’s will have the advantage of playing other C Rec teams in their final games this weekend while In Contempt will be taking on opponents from the much tougher upper division.
The Women’s C Division was off this past weekend, and Hairspray, the number one team in the division, has a pair of buys so they are guaranteed first place. Currently in second place in the C Division is Clean Sweep, who will need to win both of their games this week, including one against third place challenger Big O, in order to maintain their current standing.
Over in the Open Division it looks like Daniel Greer could take first in Division II. They picked up a win in the form of a forfeit this weekend against Interactive Male and then beat The Loft, 18-3, in their second game of the day. This week they will be taking on Moby Dick’s Hitmen, the lone Division I team in San Diego, so the odds are stacked against them. Their second game of the day will be against Extasis, who is currently in second place in the division. This weekend Extasis dropped an important game to the Division III Moby Dick’s Trojans, 14-4. The win puts the Trojans just one game out of first place behind Shameless, a race which will be decided this week and will guarantee the winner a berth to the gay softball world series, which is being held in Washington, D.C., this August.
Division IV had the weekend off, but will be back on the fields in Mira Mesa next weekend. In Division V, the J & B Tornados picked up two wins to maintain a narrow first place lead over We ROK by beating Red Envelope, 11-7, and then the Pharm Boys by forfeit. We ROK played the same teams, picking up a forfeit with the Pharm Boys and outscoring Red Envelope in an impressive 19-3 victory. Last but not least in Division VI, Red Envelope, even with their losses, has the division wrapped up with a 12-5 record, and Moby Dick’s Magnums is also guaranteed a second place finish.
Not only will this weekend be the final weekend of softball at the Poway Sportsplex and at Hourglass Park in Mira Mesa, the league will also be holding a fundraiser at Flicks to help teams raise money to attend the gay softball world series. In addition to the regular Saturday night fun at Flicks, the league will be auctioning off players for dates that include romantic dinners for two. Among the list of people being auctioned off are league commissioner Jim Costello and board member Martin Cherrier. The fun starts at 9:00 p.m.
