Front Runners North County celebrate their first birthday
Published Thursday, 21-Oct-2004 in issue 878
On Oct. 9, Front Runners North County, a running and walking group for members of the GLBT community and their family and friends, celebrated the one-year anniversary of the club’s founding. The festivities took place at Magee Park in North Carlsbad and the club greeted guests for the week’s run/walk with free T-shirts. The Front Runners are part of an international organization of GLBT runners.
Following the run, club members continued the celebration at the Hill Street Café, a club favorite. Adrienne Schlang, founder of the Front Runners North County, flew in from Germany for the occasion.
“The feedback has been quite positive because we have been told there really is no other outdoor group like this in North County,” Schlang said. “There are not many venues for people who live in North County to meet other gay and accepting people. Most of what we have heard is that they come down to Hillcrest.”
Group member Mark noted that during its first year, the club has developed into a fun and supportive group, adding, “I hope that people throughout North County will discover our group and join us for a healthy walk or a brisk run along the seawall.”
The group gathers on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month at 9:00 a.m. in Magee Park, located at the corner of Beech Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard (Coast Highway). The group’s next meeting will be Saturday, Oct. 23. The group is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities.
