Moby’s and Morgan Stanley back on top
Last season’s powerhouses take an early lead in the standing

In the second week of the San Diego Hoops basketball league’s 2004-05 season, two of last year’s top teams, Morgan Stanley and Moby Dick’s, are already leading the league with back-to-back wins. In addition, Pecs and The Loft picked up their first wins of the season.
Week 2 got off to a great start with Hummingbird/Brians’ taking on Pecs. Trying to bounce back from their Week 1 loss to Moby Dick’s, Hummingbird/Brians’ took a lead going into the end of the first half; however Pecs proved that they were not going to go down without a fight. In the second half, Pecs found their rhythm on the court and with Hummingbird/Brians’ in foul trouble at the end of the second half, Pecs capitalized on the advantage to win the game 56-51.
Morgan Stanley faced Colorworks Painting in the second game of the night, and the first half was highlighted by some great defense on the part of both teams. In the first 10 minutes of the second half, both teams remained in the single digits, but Morgan Stanley managed to break free and temporarily shake up Colorworks, forcing them to reorganize their game plan. In the second half, it looked as though Morgan Stanley was going to take over the game once and for all, but Colorworks clawed their way back into the game, taking it to the inside and attacking underneath the boards. In the end, time was not on Colorworks’ side as the buzzer sounded with them trailing by 2 points in the 53-51 game.
The Loft and Kickers, evenly matched teams, played in the 8:00 p.m. game and, once again, defense was key. Both teams exhibited great passing skills and teamwork at both ends of the court. In the end, however, The Loft managed to edge out a 50-47 win.
The final game of the night pitted Moby Dick’s against AAA Mortgage. Early in the game, AAA came out firing from beyond the goal line, gaining them an early advantage in the game. Moby Dick’s took the game to the inside, though, and reclaimed the lead. With the tide turning against them, the AAA team became increasingly frustrated with Moby’s attacks, and Moby’s used that disorganization to their advantage to win the game 62-39.
The San Diego Hoops basketball league plays every week at the Golden Hill Recreation Center. Game times are 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. The Golden Hill Recreation Center is located at 2600 Golf Course Dr.
