Pride represented at InterPride conference in Iceland
Political struggles, human rights achievements and a 2005 international Pride theme were among the issues addressed at last month’s four-day InterPride World Conference in Reykjavik, Iceland, attended by San Diego LGBT Pride Executive Director Suanne Pauley. Pauley, who serves as InterPride’s treasurer, joined more than 100 delegates from 35 cities around the world, and placed a bid to host the organization’s 2008 conference in San Diego.
The conference drew support for next October’s World Pride Celebration in Jerusalem as delegates selected a 2005 global Pride theme titled, “Equal Rights – No More – No Less”. Pauley said that San Diego LGBT Pride will use the theme as a guidepost for crafting next year’s local Pride theme. The assembly was the second held in Europe. It featured a speech by Vigdis Finnbogadottir, former president of the Republic of Iceland, plus a reception hosted by Reykjavik’s mayor, Thorolfur Arnason. Next year’s conference is scheduled for October in Minneapolis.
The 2005 celebration of San Diego LGBT Pride is scheduled for July 29-31. For more information, call (619) 297-7683.

Atkins named ‘Clean Water Leader’ by San Diego Baykeeper
Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins was named the San Diego City Council’s “Clean Water Leader”, earning the highest score on San Diego Baykeeper’s third annual Clean Water Report Card. The annual grade is given to each member of the city council, along with the mayor, based on council votes that impact San Diego’s water quality. Extra credit is given for additional efforts that impact clean water.
Atkins received an A-plus, scoring 104 points out of a possible 100, based on her perfect clean water voting record, receiving extra credit for her ongoing attempts to find funding to improve canyon maintenance and monitoring for San Diego’s urban canyon systems. The City of San Diego received an overall B grade, with Councilmembers Michael Zucchet and Donna Frye also receiving A-plus grades for 100 percent scores. Mayor Dick Murphy received a C-plus grade with 79 percent, Councilmember Scott Peters scored 88 percent for a B-plus and Councilmembers Brian Maienschein and Jim Madaffer both received C-minus grades with 72 percent. Councilmember Ralph Inzunza scored 76 percent and received a C grade.

New police storefront at North Park Community Park
When budget cuts forced the recent closure of community service centers across the city, it also brought about the loss of the North Park Police Storefront, which had shared space with the 30th Street service center until its doors closed Sept. 30. By shifting around some District 3 Community Development Block Grant Funds, Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins helped the city reopen the storefront in a new location, the North Park Adult Center, on Oct. 27. The center serves the public’s need for quick and easy access to the police and creates a safer environment for people using the park.
The North Park Adult Center is located at Howard Avenue and Oregon Street in North Park. The storefront is situated on the south side of the adult center, facing the park.
