Basketball back on the courts after rainout
Published Thursday, 04-Nov-2004 in issue 880
After taking a week off because a leaky roof at the Golden Hill Recreation Center made the court unusable, the San Diego Hoops basketball league is back in action, continuing their 2004-05 Season.
In Game 1 of the night, the undefeated Moby Dick’s team faced The Loft. In the first half, The Loft had a hard time finding its rhythm on offense and Moby Dick’s struggled to break through from The Loft’s defense. Things started to click for Moby Dick’s in the second half as their passing game picked up, making sure that the ball got into the hot hands of David Lott, who scored 19 points for the team. The Loft relied on the hands of Bryan Leigh, who was good for 11 points. In the end, Moby Dick’s took over in the final minutes of the second half to win the game 51-31.
Game 2 of the night had AAA Mortgage taking on Kickers. After struggling in the opening two weeks of the season, Kickers looked like a team reborn.
“We haven’t had a full team the entire season, so this is first time we’ve all actually played together,” said Kickers coach Dwight Dunn, commenting on the team’s outstanding performance this week. “We have a really good team, a solid team and we should be OK.”
In the first half, Robert Simmons came out firing for Kickers, scoring 15 points. AAA’s passing game was on, but they struggled to find the hoop in the first half. Things picked up for AAA in the second half as they took the game to the inside with their big man, Dan Taylor, who scored 22 points in the game.
“We got the ball inside more,” AAA coach Brett Drake said about the second half comeback for the team. “I mean, we’ve got one of the biggest men in the league, so we’ve just got to get the ball inside. We’ve got shooters, but 2-points and defense are going to win the games more than threes [3-point shots] are.”
Despite a great effort by AAA Mortgage Market, Kickers never surrendered the lead and Robert Simmons scored a total of 27 points for Kickers. The final for the game was 58–46 in Kickers’ favor.
“I think the main thing was team work,” Dunn said about the victory. “That and Rob Simmons is going to carry us a long way, so we have to give him a little more confidence and a little more freedom so he should be OK.”
Game 3 of the night had Morgan Stanley defending its undefeated record against Hummingbird/Brians’. It was a close game through the first half, with Hummingbird/Brians’ connecting great passes and holding a tight defense. Morgan Stanley looked a little sluggish in the first half, but pulled things together to dominate in the second half. Hummingbird/Brians’ tried to hang in there with some great passing and outside shooting, but in the end it just wasn’t enough; Morgan Stanley won 52-33. Robert Wiggins was the lead scorer for Hummingbird/Brians’ with 17 points. Morgan Stanley had three players in double digits, but Brandon Patchett led the team with 13 points.
The final game of the night pitted Colorworks Painting against Pecs. Playing shorthanded, Colorworks started the game with only four players on the court. Colorworks worked hard for every point, but they were no match for Pecs, who took a 22-point lead in the first half of the game. Knowing they had the game in the bag, Pecs pulled one of their players to even things up. Playing on even standing, Colorworks managed to chip away at the lead, coming within 10 points of Pecs. In the second half, Pecs put all five players back in to secure their lead. Despite having only four players the entire game, Colorworks came out firing in the second half and did their best to keep it close, scoring 35 points to Pecs’ 38 points in the second half. The final for the game was 74-55, with Pecs on top. The high scorer for the Pecs was Jeremy McDowell with 24 points. Colorworks was lead by Randy Williams with 20 points.
Basketball season continues this week with games at the Golden Hill Recreation Center. Games start at 6:00 p.m. and continue until 10:00 p.m.
