‘Uncensored’ website stirs up Idaho high school newspaper
Student starts underground site after openly gay student drops out due to harassment

POST FALLS, Idaho (AP) – Holly Bowen got frustrated when her high school newspaper didn’t report a story that she thought should have been covered.
An openly gay student dropped out of Post Falls High after reportedly being harassed by other students. Bowen thought people should know, so she started her own underground website – free from school oversight and censorship.
“I noticed the school paper was ignoring some of the less-prestigious issues,” the 17-year-old senior said.
Post Falls Uncensored is meant to be an outlet for students with opinions that wouldn’t likely make it into print in the school’s student paper, the Trojan Times, she said.
Bowen’s site includes satires on the traditions of homecoming week and an article offering tips on how to use school computers to access websites administrators have blocked, including Post Falls Uncensored.
“Students should not be able to access that anyway when they’re here,” said principal John Billetz. “The reason we [blocked access] is because it would pique interest. We want kids more interested here in educational research on our computers.”
Assistant Superintendent Becky Ford said the district also has a responsibility to protect students. She said there may be postings or articles that could cause problems for students.
“We respect the students’ rights of freedom of speech,” Ford said. “My hope is that the freedom of speech is never exercised at the expense of others’ freedoms and rights and safety.”
Bowen’s website has won support from some students and parents, she said. She has received a negative comment from a student too, she said.
Bowen told the student she would post his opinion.
“I’m not going to silence any voice,” she said.
