After three weeks of makeup due to rainouts, the battle is over for the teams of America’s Finest City Softball League (AFCSL). The four-month season, which began back in March, saw 39 teams playing at 10 different skill levels (four of which were women-only divisions). In celebration of the end of the season, the league held a party at Moby Dick’s, which sponsored four teams in the league, three of which took first place in their divisions.
The Moby Dick’s Hitmen — who played in the uncontested Open Division I — finished off the season with a pair of wins, making up for their only loss of the season, a game they had to forfeit as four of their players were drinking between games and thus not eligible to play. This week, the entire team showed up ready to play and beat The Loft, 16-9, and Daniel Greer Realty, 7-6.
Despite the loss, Greer hung in to beat their second place rival, Extasis, in the final week of play, claiming first place in Division II with a 12-9 record. Extasis ended the season with a 9-12 record to take second, while rounding out the top three in Division II was The Loft, who ended their season with a 7-14 record.
It came down to the final games of the season in Division III. Going into the final week of play Shameless had a two-game lead over the Moby Dick’s Trojans, but that got shaken up as Shameless lost both of their games, 12-11, against Flicks, and 9-5, against Interactive Male. The Trojans, needing to win both of their games to tie for first place, did just that, beating Hamburger Mary’s, 12-3, and Team Star, 10-7. In head to head competition this season the Trojan’s beat Shameless three out of four times, earning them the first place trophy and an automatic berth to the softball World Series in Washington, D.C. Taking third place in Division III was Brian’s Bears, who finished the season with a 13-7 record.
Division IV was decided by a one game differential between Team Star, who took first place, and The Center Starz, who ended up in second after leading the league for the majority of the season. In the final week of the season, both teams split their games. Team Star beat the Bourbon Street Gators, 7-4, then lost to the Trojans, 10-7. The Center Starz ended the season beating Hamburger Mary’s, 15-4, only to suffer their first loss to the Xila Zephyrs, 9-2, after beating them three times this season. The Zephyrs rounded out the top three in Division IV.
Final scores were not available for Division V at press time, but the J & B Tornados, who battled back and fourth all season with We ROK, held out to take first place in the division ahead of ROK. Meanwhile, the Live and Let Live Alano Club came on strong in the second half of the season to take third place in the division.
Last but not least for the Open Division, Red Envelope, despite losing both games in their final week of play, still managed to bring home a first place win in Division VI. Moby Dick’s Magnums took second and the Pharm Boys ended up in third place in the Division.
In the Women’s Division, Moby Dick’s was the uncontested winner of the A Division. B Division wrapped up play two weeks ago with Powerhouse Gym in first place, while in C Rec, Creative Futons guaranteed their first place finish last week. The only thing left to be decided going into the final week of play was who would walk away with first place in the C Division.
Clean Sweep had their work cut out for them, two games behind Hairspray in the C Division. Smashing their way through the competition, Clean Sweep beat Creative Futons, 21-1, and the Big O, 7-4, but they still needed Hairspray to drop two games just to tie for first. Hairspray wasn’t about to let first place slip away though, and finished the season with a bang, beating Six Degrees, 19-5, and In Contempt, 17-4.
While regular season play has ended, there will be playoffs to see which teams will be able to pick up at-large bids to play in the softball world series this August. For anyone who may not have had a chance to play with the AFCSL during the regular season, fall ball is just two months away with a short season starting in September and running through November.
