The drama of drinking
Published Thursday, 02-Dec-2004 in issue 884
While I am not a doctor or nutritionist, I will pass along some advice on alcohol consumption, gained through personal experience and friendly conversations with some of San Diego’s best (and cutest) bartenders:
• Drink in moderation. If you and your friends are drinking tequila shots at 3:35 a.m., be prepared for a throbbing headache the day after.
• If you’re intoxicated, any bartender will call you a cab. While you’re at it, ask him/her if it’s okay for your car to be parked where it is overnight. Morning-after towings make hangovers much worse.
• If possible, eat before, during and after you drink.
• Light-colored drinks (like vodka) are less likely to cause a hangover than darker drinks (like whiskey).
• Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
• Take Emergen-C (available at Henry’s and Whole Foods) after you’ve had too much booze. This stuff is great: It replenishes your electrolytes, which greatly reduces hangover headaches. Pedialyte (marketed for infants) also replenishes electrolytes fast. You can get this at most drug stores and supermarkets.
