For all you lesbos out there looking for an appropriate excuse as to why you watch FOX’s hottest teen drama, “The O.C.”, every week, it seems your prayers have been answered. The current buzz online is that one of the show’s main characters, Marissa, played by current “it girl,” Mischa Barton, will be involved in a significant lesbian relationship starting this January. For those of you unfamiliar with “The O.C.”, Barton’s character is already a filthy rich, rail thin, alcoholic high schooler, who can down a beer faster than you can say the word “cunnilingus.” The addition of girl-on-girl action into her already chaotic SoCal lifestyle, promises to kick the term “dyke drama” into a whole new stratosphere. The question remains, however, will viewers tune in? Or perhaps more importantly… will you?
In a recent interview with Out.com , Josh Schwartz, creator of the “The O.C.”, denied that the lesbian storyline is a ratings stunt, and instead explained, “Marissa is at a point in her life where she’s trying to find herself and her true identity. There’s another character who she really connects with. It’s a girl, which is not something Marissa may have anticipated. But she’s willing and game to explore and experiment with that.”
Those of you who are up-to-date on your lesbian pop culture will recognize Mischa Barton immediately from her two previous dyke-related roles. A few years ago, Barton played Katie, the love interest of daughter Jessie on the family drama “Once and Again”. Many have labeled that relationship as one of the most authentic and moving GLBT portrayals in TV history. Barton also played a small role in the dyke film Lost and Delirious in which she stumbled upon (and subsequently blew the whistle on) the sexual relationship between the film’s two female main characters.
When asked if he discussed the lesbo story twist with Barton before committing to it, Schwartz told Out.com, “We talked about it. She’s game. She had a storyline like this on Once and Again. Marissa loves whatever you throw at her. She’s game. If she’s OD-ing in Tijuana, she’s up for it. Exploring new parts of her sexuality, she’s up for it. But she wanted to make sure it came from a place of emotion.”
Both FOX and Schwartz are not releasing the final piece of the puzzle, and are staying silent on the topic of who Marissa’s love interest will be. So, in a friendly attempt to assist them, I’ve compiled a Queer Abby list of suggested lesbians, based on my many years of TV/film addiction. Note: cast members of “The L-Word” need not apply.
Angelina Jolie – I know, I know… she’s a busy woman with all that jet setting to Cambodia, and the age difference is a bit large – but age was clearly not a factor when she recently played Colin Farrell’s mother in Alexander. And admit it, you’d watch her in anything (including “The O.C.”).

Ashlee Simpson – Unlike her sister, Ashlee’s got the whole tomboy/alt rock vibe somewhat working for her, adding a few points to her dyke-o-meter. Not to mention, after the recent “SNL” fiasco, I’m pretty sure she’s actively seeking out non-music-related career options.
Lindsay Lohan – We don’t care if they’re real or fake – we just want to see more of them. Preferably on “The O.C.”… Preferably in a bikini.
Tammy Lynn Michaels – Why not add some authenticity to the part, and bring in someone who really knows how to kiss another woman? Who knows – FOX might even land a discounted musical guest out of the arrangement.
Feel free to send your suggestions for “The O.C.”’s new dyke to me, at queerabby@hotmail.com. If they’re funny enough, I’ll publish them. If they’re not funny, I’ll use them as kindling for my holiday hearth!
Now, speaking of holidays, cheer is in the air in San Diego, and many events are taking place around town to help you celebrate:
Bad Kitties will be bumpin’ through the holidays, so check it out every Friday night at Numbers. And if you haven’t been to The Flame recently, you should! Latin Night brings out the hotties every Sunday. Hot ladies, hot Latin music… what a way to forget about Monday.

Friday night ladies’ night at Bourbon Street is a pre-clubbing tradition – fill up at the nacho bar and down some $3 martinis while the night is still young. Thursdays through Saturdays, an assortment of specialty martinis at Bourbon Street are $3 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and only $2 Mondays through Wednesdays, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
6 Degrees is where it’s at on the weekends, with happy hour drink specials, DJs, live music and beer busts on the patio. And don’t miss the return of Underground, an open mic night hosted by Laura Jane every Monday. Come down and show off your talent for poetry, comedy, music or spoken word. Sign-ups begin at 6:30 p.m. If football is your thing, hang with Laurie out on the patio and watch the game with like-minded fans, drink and food specials.
Also, make sure you don’t miss local songstress, Lauren DeRose, when she performs live at Twiggs’ Green Room (4590 Park Blvd.) on Friday, Dec.17, at 9:30 p.m. San Diego’s local KUSI News says, “If you aren’t familiar with the name ‘Lauren DeRose’ you will be soon enough. This up and coming artist has a rustic voice and unique melody that stays with you long after you’ve experienced it.” The $8 cover at Twiggs includes music all night, from some of San Diego’s best acoustic performers. Don’t miss it!
