Number of out transgender female golfers: 1
Australian trans golfer Mianne Bagger was allowed to play earlier this year in the Australian Women’s Open. Under intense media scrutiny, Bagger played badly and did not qualify for the money. But, her presence in a national golf competition was hailed as a major advancement for transgender athletes.
Age of Martina Navratilova: 47
This summer, at the age of 47, out tennis player Navratilova became the oldest woman since 1922 to win a singles match at Wimbledon.
Combined number of press releases put out by the Chicago Gay Games and the Montreal Outgames: 83
In the battle to attract competitors to their respective international sports festivals, both organizations began a media blitz this year to gain support. The Gay Games is currently leading the press release tally 55-28.
Number of professional athletes who made anti-gay slurs this year: 5
Philadelphia Eagles receiver Terrell Owens, professional wrestler Brock Lesnar, Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz, Atlanta Braves catcher Eddie Perez and Miami Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau made headlines this year for their opinions on GLBT people.
Openly gay athletes who competed in the Olympics: 8
Robert Dover and Guenter Seidel (both on the American equestrian team), and British Equestrian Team member Carl Hester; tennis players Martina Navratilova and Amelie Mauresmo; Dutch swimmer Johann Kenkhuis; German cyclist Judith Arndt; and female German fencer Imke Duplitzer.
