Showtime to feature story of slain soldier’s transgender lover
On May 31, Soldier’s Girl will make its television debut on Showtime. The true story of a young soldier who fell in love with a transgender nightclub singer forms the basis for this original drama starring Troy Garity as 21-year-old Army private Barry Winchell. When Winchell falls for Calpernia Adams (Lee Pace), an alluring transgender entertainer, Winchell ignites the jealous fury of his homophobic brothers-in-arms, particularly his roommate Justin (Sean Hatosy), an anti-social misfit whose rage spurs violent action. Andre Braugher costars.

Hillcrest Youth Center announces HIV- positive youth group
The Hillcrest Youth Center will begin offering “Think Pozitive,” a confidential group specifically for HIV-positive youth ages 14-24. The support group will meet every Saturday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Hillcrest Youth Center. Center to hold domestic partnership panel, May 23
The Center will host a panel discussion concerning the current legal status of same-sex relationships and pending legislation that, if passed, will grant much-needed rights and recognition to gay and lesbian couples in California. Panel speakers include Assemblymember Christine Kehoe, Board of Equalization member John Chiang and Geoffrey Kors, executive director of Equality California (formerly known as C.A.P.E.). Panelists will explain and discuss AB 205 (The Domestic Partners Rights and Responsibilities Act of 2003), AB 17 (state contractors), important property tax rule changes and other relationship protections. Additionally, a notary public will be available to register couples as domestic partners during the discussion.

Amor Prohibido Latino/a GLBT formal, May 31
Bienestar Los Angeles will host Amor Prohibido (Forbidden Love), LA’s only formal event completely dedicated to the Latino/a GLBT communities, Saturday, May 31. The evening will begin with a formal dinner, professional pictures, and end with LA’s hottest DJ. Formal attire is requested.

Pride honors leaders and activists for 2003
San Diego LGBT Pride honorees will be publicly recognized at Pride’s Spirit of Stonewall Rally, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., July 25, at the Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. The rally will kick off San Diego’s 29th Pride weekend, which continues with a mile-long parade down University Ave., July 26, at 11:00 a.m.
2003 award recipients include Stonewall Service Award winners VAGINA (Vibrant Activist Grrls Invoking National Attention), a grassroots organization formed in 2001 that has helped re-organize and raise the visibility of San Diego’s annual Dyke March. Community Service Award winners include Caryn (Ren) Petty, recognized for her youth activism and achievements as director of Youth Pride and coordinator for Pride’s Youth Xone; and Brenda Watson, recognized for her activist spirit in numerous GLBT organizations such as San Diego Transfamily, the Balboa Park for All Coalition, Mama’s Kitchen, PAWS and the Imperial Court de San Diego. Lambda Biotechnology Association mixer, June 14
The Lambda Biotechnology Association will hold a mixer and membership drive on Saturday, June 14, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm.
