The Chargers will and have always let us down…. I tried not to get excited about them again this year, and once again I got all involved and this past Saturday’s game, though exciting, just about gave me a heart attack… and why use a rookie kicker anyway? The Chargers, even when good, always end up being losers…. Let’s just send them to L.A.
‘Soulplates’… a must-go-to event!
Coming up on Saturday, Jan. 22, is an event that everyone is talking about, that should be a big hit. A celebrity art extravaganza, Soulplates is a fun AIDS benefit for Being Alive San Diego, with the honorary chair being Jack O’Brien of The Old Globe…. It will be a gala auction of plates artfully done and signed by major movie, television and Broadway stars, and local personalities. … Plates by Elton John, Elizabeth Taylor, etc.… over 50 art plates! It will be an evening of food and dancing. Call (619) 291-1400 for tickets and more information.
Young elected to city council… Stevens era over
The election of former schoolteacher and counselor Tony Young has all but brought the final curtain down on the Rev. George Stevens’ political career, and his “4th District machine”. While Stevens had a solid record of building the 4th District into a more viable and less crime-ridden district, it was his divisiveness and homophobic reputation that will also be remembered. I am proud that the GLBT people of color leadership, Councilmember Atkins and myself supported Tony Young from the beginning of his campaign… while the San Diego Democratic Club, the Gay & Lesbian Times and others supported in-and-out of the closet candidate Dwayne Crenshaw, who proved how low down he was after he lost the primary and did nothing for Young’s campaign…. Thank goodness Dwayne Crenshaw’s career is also over. I will give credit to the San Diego Democratic Club and the Gay & Lesbian Times for coming aboard the Young campaign for the general election. Hopefully, Stevens will be the last homophobe ever elected to our city council.

Alano Club gala dinner set for Jan. 29
As many of you know, the Alano Club has been changing and saving lives for over two decades within our alcohol/drug recovery community…. Our community owes much to the good people of both the Alano Club and Stepping Stone.
Coming up on Saturday, Jan. 29, will be the Alano Club’s second annual gala dinner, with great entertainment, food (by the award-winning California Cuisine), friendship and pride. I urge our community to support this most worthy event, so for more information and tickets, phone (619) 497-1702 or (619) 246-6807.

About that male strip night
Well, it seems all kinds of rumors and misinformation has been going around about the opening next month of San Diego’s first all-male nude strip club night, Sunday Nitelife. First of all, there have been nude female dancers for decades, which is legal…. I don’t see what what’s wrong with a gay male nude dancers night, as even our nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C., has them.
Now, to set the record straight (especially for Steve Yuhas), Amstardam Productions will be the producers of this weekly night, and the owners are Tom Brown and Mike Phillips, who will be producing, hiring and running the evening.

Big Mike (left), shown here with businessman Rick Ford, will have a birthday bash Jan. 31 at Martinis Above Fourth.
Contrary to what Steve Yuhas has said, I am not involved in any way as an owner or manager, or with hiring, etc. I have talked to Amstardam Productions about future AIDS benefits and safe-sex education campaigns, etc., and they have agreed.
In my last column, I made a mistake from the club’s new release, and they will be offering “tease dancing”, not lap dancing. (Steve Yuhas was right about one thing, and that is that lap dancing is illegal).
I feel female nude dancing, which is legal in this state and city, should have the same laws and regulations as the male nude dancers will at this new gay night. For more information, phone Amstardam Productions at (619) 295-8822.
