GSDBA’s 2005 directory released
The Greater San Diego Business Association released its new directory for 2005, which contains nearly 600 business listings and display ads as well as historical background highlighting the organization’s 26-year evolution.
Distribution of the 320-page directory will extend this year to local colleges and universities, such as San Diego City College, SDSU and UCSD. It can also be found at businesses throughout Hillcrest, GLBT bars and clubs and The Center. Members of the GSDBA will soon receive it by mail.
The directory, subtitled, “Community on the Go”, features full color and cross-referencing indexes. “Every year we try to improve how we highlight member businesses,” said Joyce Marieb, executive director of the GSDBA.
The directory will continue to be distributed throughout the year at various GLBT events, such as the San Diego LGBT Pride festival, North Park Spring Festival, CityFest and AIDS Walk. “We’re covering more than 100 distribution points that will be replenished monthly,” Marieb added.
For more information, call the GSDBA office at (619) 296-4543.

Study focuses on perception of gay and lesbian parents
A Cal State University San Bernardino master’s study seeks to understand how gay and lesbian parents are treated and perceived in their children’s schools. Gay and lesbian parents are still needed for the research study, which is anonymous. The study aims to understand the complexities that gays and lesbians experience as parents with children in the public or private school systems and to explore areas in which the current system does not meet their unique needs. The more responses they get, the better the data will be and the better the study can draw conclusions on how best to improve conditions for gay and lesbian parents.
Call Dr. Brian Heisterkamp at (909) 880-7665 for further information and to receive the questionnaire.
Harm reduction crystal meth program targets gay and bisexual men
A local counseling center has joined with other regional organizations in presenting options for addressing the growing problem of substance use in the GLBT community. The new group, Lifestyles in Transition: A Group for Gay Men, hosted by First Avenue Counseling Centre, offers an alternative harm-reduction approach for current substance users who have had unsuccessful experiences with other intervention options.
Lifestyles in Transition works from the harm-reduction approach and targets gay and bisexual men who have a habit of using crystal methamphetamine.
For more information about Lifestyles in Transition or information on individual, family or couples counseling, contact Tom Wall, Marriage and Family Therapist Intern #43024 (Supervised by Daniel Carr MFCC #31037), at (619) 708-7126 or email him at tom@livecompassion.com.
