Cut-a-thon benefits tsunami victims
“Hairdressers Who Dare to Care”, a fundraising cut-a-thon, takes place Sunday, Feb. 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Gila Rut Salon in Hillcrest. The proceeds will go to NetAid, a nonprofit organization that provides educational facilities to children in the poorest countries worldwide, including those affected by the recent tsunami.
The five participating salons are Earth Salon, Eco-Tique, Gila Rut Salon, Savvy and Tiger Tail. Prices for haircuts and manicures will start at $20. Massage donations start at $1 per minute.
“Hair dressers are such giving people and I knew that together, we could make a difference to help the youngest victims of the tsunami who lost so much. This is our way to make people here in San Diego feel beautiful, and at the same time, help the children of Southern Asia,” said Keri Davis, owner of Gila Rut Salon.
Gila Rut Salon is located at 1010 University Ave., Suite C211.
San Diego LGBT Pride announces photo contest
A recently installed bench in Balboa Park commemorating San Diego LGBT Pride is the subject of a photography contest that gives participants a chance at winning passes to this year’s festival, as well as other prizes.
The rules are simple. Search and locate the bench along the walkway by the Timken Museum of Art and then creatively incorporate it into a digital or regular hardcopy photograph. The bench cannot be moved or marked in anyway.
The bench was purchased by Pride and given to the city last year as a show of appreciation for its support. It features a brass plate inset of the Pride logo and a dedication plaque to the San Diego community. It was an idea that materialized after an attendee suggested it at one of Pride’s town hall meetings last year. “The bench is a gift to the city and it also adds a little gay awareness to the area,” said Suanne Pauley, executive director of Pride.
Five winning photos will be selected, which will be displayed on Pride’s website and in this year’s 2005 Souvenir Program. Additionally, each winner will receive a pair of weekend passes to this summer’s Pride festival, plus a T-shirt and hat.
Photo submissions must be received by May 1. They can be emailed to director@sdpride.org or sent by regular mail to: Photo Contest, P.O. Box 34352, San Diego, CA, 92163.

Bi-national same-sex couples sought to participate in report
Immigration Equality and Human Rights Watch, the largest U.S.-based human rights organization, are preparing a report on the problems faced by bi-national same-sex partners under United States immigration law.
Anonymity is assured to anyone who requests it, and they will conceal any identifying details at your discretion. The stories from the interviews will be used to put a human face on the plight of bi-national same-sex couples and their experience with the United States’ discriminatory immigration laws.
Write to Scott Long at longs@hrw.org or lgbt@hrw.org to give those conducting the study an idea of the situation you face or have faced.
Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous meetings in San Diego
Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous, also known as the Augustine Fellowship, is a 12-step, tradition-oriented fellowship supported entirely through the contributions of its members, and is free to all who need it.
To counter the destructive consequences of sex and love addiction, the support group is dedicated to dealing with the addictive behavior, finding a common denominator in obsessive/compulsive patterns that render personal differences and sexual or gender orientation irrelevant.
Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous is protective of the anonymity of its members, and meetings are normally closed to outsiders and those who are merely curious. However, anyone who fears they may have sex and love addiction is welcome, as long as the anonymity of everyone attending each meeting is respected.
Call (619) 685-7211 for more information on the fellowship.
