The San Diego Rainbow Scuba Club (SDRSC), San Diego’s only scuba club for the GLBT community, will hold a general meeting at The Center on March 26 at 5:00 p.m. to promote a national scuba diving fundraiser called “Diving for Life: The International Gay and Lesbian SCUBA Jamboree”. All proceeds will benefit San Diego HIV/AIDS and social service agencies

The Jamboree is a fundraising event that offers a fun-filled week of SCUBA diving with 100-125 GLBT divers attending. Held annually, the event has taken place in previous years in Bonaire, The Cayman Islands, Cozumel, The British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas. This year’s Jamboree will be held in Curacao.

All proceeds from the Jamboree are donated to charitable organizations that support the health concerns of the GLBT community. Each SCUBA club that participates in the Jamboree is allocated a portion of that year’s funds for its participation in the event. The club then decides which charities within its area receive the funds. Since its inception, the Diving For Life SCUBA Jamboree has raised almost $315,000, which has been distributed to local GLBT charity organizations.

Last year, with only four divers attending the event, SDRSC raised $1,394 for The Center. The diving club’s goal this year is to double that amount.

“I have found that a lot of the people who attend DFL are regulars, so expect it to fill up quickly with them. It’s really quite an experience and a great opportunity to meet people with various interesting backgrounds. Oh, and then there’s the fabulous diving,” said Glenn McComb, an SDRSC club member who attended last’s year’s Jamboree.
