I will be making my final comments on Bishop Brom and some latest developments in my next column, as I try to calm down over some of his recent statements.
David Trick
At times, when such high-profile people in our community pass on… many forget about the partner/lover they left behind. We are so grateful to the McCusker family for including David Trick in almost everything they did…. David’s parents even flew in from back East.
But what I want to say is thank you, David, for making John’s last years so happy and full of love and joy. As one of John’s friends, I will always be thankful that I introduced the both of you… you both were so happy… and as I said at The Center community meeting, “We will be with the McCusker family and David Trick long after the media headlines and cameras are gone.” We mean this, and David, know we loved both of you and are here for you always. God bless you.
Terri Schiavo case
The sad Schiavo case in Florida has shaken up the nation and I have many mixed emotions on this issue that I will keep to myself. But what is important is that everyone get to their attorney and get their will, last wishes, etc. and a living will signed… do it today. If you do not have an attorney, I recommend Rick Kerman at (619) 595-1379.
Children’s Easter egg hunt a huge hit!
Almost 400 children (from a few months old to 13) showed up for the third annual GLBT Community Children’s Easter Egg Hunt at Trolley Barn Park, which was sponsored by the Imperial Court.
It was so much fun, and every child left with a beautiful Easter basket. A big thank-you to Family Matters, The Center, the Gay & Lesbian Times, RC Awards, ROK Enterprise, Greater San Diego Business Association, the Democratic Club, Patti’s Bar, Bacchus House, the Eagle, San Diego Men’s Chorus, the leather community, Toni Puente Sound, Priority Pharmacy, Niederfrank’s Ice Cream, Tommy’s Quality Meats and all our wonderful volunteers.

Mayor Gavin Newsom, shown here with businessman Rick Ford, will be in San Diego April 11 for a private GLBT breakfast. Call (619) 692-1967 for info.
Though yes, I am the founder of this now annual event, all credit must go to my co-founder, Mrs. Linda Childers…. It was a months-long labor of love. Also, a big thank you to the 2005 co-chairs, Emperor Chris Horton and Empress Lala Too!
We will soon have a GLBT tavern guild
It’s been tried before, but has not lasted long because of, to put it bluntly, egos, infighting and a lack of interest… but now one of John McCusker’s legacies will be the organizing of a new GLBT tavern guild. After John was attacked for owning gay bars and recently when a political candidate returned some bar owners checks (he has since sincerely apologized), Big Mike and I discussed he and others forming a tavern guild like the one in San Francisco, where bar owners, managers and all employees may join. (No, I will not be a part of it, but will give advice when asked.)
So now bartender Big Mike, bar owner Richard Britton and bar manager Leo are organizing the first meeting with strong support from such bar owners as Chris Shaw, Robi Cox, Greg Scott, Bart Johnson and many others…. I predict this tavern guild will become one of the most powerful and influential organizations in our community. For more info, phone (619) 807-7324.
Ortega’s… the restaurant find for 2005!
This should tell you something about Ortega’s Mexican Bistro at 141 University Ave. in Hillcrest: It’s been open only a few weeks and on a Tuesday night, in the pouring rain, it was packed with happy diners. Yes, just one lunch or dinner at Ortega’s and rain, snow or a tsunami will not keep you away!
They haven’t even begun advertising, so get there before the world finds out. As you all know, I love food, and especially Mexican-American. I am very picky about my ethnic food. Ortega’s is one of the best Mexican restaurants on the West Coast… healthy (no lard) and fabulous-tasting food! We’re talking authentic food that will take your taste buds on a magical adventure to Mexico… everything on the menu is outstanding, and I’ve tried 90 percent of it already, from appetizers and salads to soups, entrées and their unbelievable desserts.
Co-owner Juan Carlos Ortega’s family has been in the fine-dining business in Mexico for almost 50 years (including a lobster restaurant in Puerto Nuevo). Co-owner John Haugland is a former police officer that is a host of hosts. The entire staff is super friendly and quick. They have hired a top chef and food consultant, Dan Gonzales, who gets my vote as the “Mexican Iron Chef” of America…. Run, don’t walk, to Ortega’s, open for lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and dinner from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. For more info, call (619) 692-4211 or info@ortegabistro.com. I say olè to Ortega’s!
Lunch with Supervisor Ron Roberts
photo
Juan Carlos Ortega and John Haugland welcome you to the new and exciting Ortega’s Bistro!
Last week, County Supervisor Ron Roberts hosted a luncheon for his top advisers and supporters…. It was a who’s who of San Diego’s business community and top political and community leaders. My table partner for this lunch was former police chief Jerry Sanders (looking healthy and happy). While I will not discuss the presentations and discussions at the lunch, I will say that Supervisor Roberts will have very strong support for his re-election.
The possible candidacy of Councilmember Toni Atkins was treated with respect. Ron Roberts has a long history with our GLBT community and many are hoping not to see a “Roberts v. Atkins” race in 2006.
A tribute for Ms. Verna King
Ms. Verna King was Miss Louisiana State Fair 1937, so in respect, I will not go into her age, but last week this San Diego icon, African-American stateswoman and Democratic activist was honored with a special tribute that had over 400 people packing the Five Star Banquet Hall…. It was a who’s who of elected officials, high society, Democratic leaders, the African-American community and almost every community in attendance.
Co-chairs Dr. Pat Washington and Todd Gloria did an outstanding job (Maggie Allington also worked hard on this event) and the food was flawless (ABBAS Catering)… it was a special evening of love, admiration and respect for a pioneer and hero of our city.
I had the honor of introducing the keynote speaker, Congressmember Bob Filner, and presenting awards on behalf of Supervisor Ron Roberts and the Human Relations Commission.
Ms. King’s speech was worth the entire evening… very powerful and moving…. Congratulations, Ms. Verna King!
