On display: Colleen Ross is known for mixing elements of the golden age of Hollywood, comic books, ‘30s deco, ‘40s pin-ups, and ‘60s Pop Art in her own artwork. Glamorous is the word used to describe the women in the portraits and sketches created by Ross. A one-woman show of new original paintings and serigraphs on canvas will be on view at Fingerhut Gallery from July 26 through Aug. 22. An opening reception for the artist will take place tonight, 7:00-9:30 p.m. at Fingerhut Gallery of La Jolla, 1205 Prospect Street. For more information, call (858) 456-9900.
When I’m bad, I’m better…: It’s opening night for Dirty Blonde at the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park. Dirty Blonde is a hybrid comedy that is part Mae West docu-drama, part love story and part vaudeville. The play follows Jo, an aspiring actress, who admires West for her determination to beat the odds. She, along with two male cast members, regales audiences with re-enactments of the turns of West’s showbiz career in a celebration of Mae West’s independence and bravely bawdy spirit. Dirty Blonde features stage and screen star Kathy Najimy and runs through Aug. 24. See it tonight at 8:00 p.m. Call (619) 239-2255.

Double your pleasure: It’s a double bill tonight at Diversionary Theatre. Join the Bisexual Foundation and Bisexual Forum for a benefit concert with bisexual singing sensation Skott Freedman. See Falsettos at 6:30 p.m. before Freedman’s performance at 9:00 p.m. A ticket to both performances is $30. For the concert only, tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Freedman’s dynamic live and often humorous performances have made him one of the hottest acts on the college circuit for over four years now. He is also the nation’s youngest touring bisexual activist, educating on bisexuality and breaking down common myths about it (such as that line about doubling your pleasure). Diversionary Theater is located at 4545 Park Blvd., #101, in University Heights. For more information, contact Richard at (858) 623-9685.
Work it off: Make up for the rest of the weekend with a 14-mile Island Breeze Tour group ride with Rainbow Cyclists. Arrive 15 minutes early to learn basic hand signals and safety tips for group riding. Call (619) 523-5504 to reserve your space.

This ain’t Green Acres: The Country is the story of Richard, an English country doctor who brings an unconscious woman into his home on a cold, dark night. Richard tells Corrine, his wife, that he found her lying by the side of the road. As the truth about the woman — how she was hurt, who she is, who she knows — slowly emerges, the relationships in this unlikely trio are tested. Catch the American premiere tonight at 8:00 p.m. at La Jolla Playhouse, located on the UCSD campus at the corner of La Jolla Village Dr. and Torrey Pines Rd. in La Jolla. The Country plays through Aug. 31. Call (858) 550-1010.

Frisky fishies: On certain spring nights, hundreds of small silvery fish called grunion wash up onto southern California beaches to spawn. To see them, dress warmly, grab a flashlight and head to the beach around high tide. If you must catch them, you’ll need a fishing license and quick hands — no digging holes or using nets, grunion can be caught by hand only. It’s the law.
