Upcoming Immigration Equality workshop and discussion
Immigration Equality San Diego is co-sponsoring an immigration workshop on Saturday, April 16, at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UCSD from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The workshop will focus on self-petitioning, which enables foreign-born researchers, scientists and technical professionals the opportunity to petition for permanent residency (green card) in the United States. The workshop will provide the necessary tools and accurate information from experienced immigration attorneys.
The workshop is free of charge but space is limited. RSVP to jkp135@att.net.
Immigration Equality San Diego meets the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at The Center, 3909 Centre St.

Former Pride board member denied political asylum
San Diego LGBT Pride is assisting in the political quest of former board member and gay activist Mike Karim, who was imprisoned Jan. 4, at Otay Mesa Detention Facility after his visa expired. Known also as Mohamad Abdul-Karim in his native Lebanon, he was denied U.S. political asylum in 1998 and currently awaits the outcome of a motion to reopen his case.
Karim, who faces persecution if sent back to Lebanon for his activism with GLBT organizations, has served on the boards of San Diego LGBT Pride, Consolidated Association of Pride and Al-Fatiha, an international gay Muslim group. He has also volunteered for AIDS Walk San Diego for the last six years.
In an effort to gain support for Karim’s case, the San Diego LGBT Pride office has issued a letter to community leaders asking for signatures favoring his asylum and release from prison. Additionally, several members of Congress and various organizations within the local community are working on Karim’s behalf as new proceedings for his asylum continue.
“Our community needs to step up and support Mike, as well as other LGBT individuals who face the same type of legal and political immigration issues,” said Suanne Pauley, executive director of San Diego LGBT Pride.
Those interested in lending their support through signatures or monetary donations for Karim’s defense fund should call the Pride office at (619) 297-7683.
